Dometic DM2852 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic DM2852 uses an absorption cooling system. Ammonia liquefies in the finned condenser coil at the top rear, then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer. There, circulating hydrogen gas makes it evaporate and produce cold. The evaporator tubing is sloped so the liquid ammonia moves down by gravity. Because of this, the refrigerator must be level whenever the vehicle is parked for several hours. If it isn't, ammonia can pool in the tubing and block circulation. Level enough to live in comfortably is level enough. While driving, the vehicle's motion keeps the ammonia moving.
In AUTO mode, the controls pick between 120 V AC and LP gas, and AC always has priority. If AC is lost, the unit switches to gas. When AC comes back, it switches back to AC. If the burner doesn't light, the CHECK lamp comes on. Press the ON/OFF button off and on again to start a new ignition sequence. On this model, the AUTO lamp is off when the unit is running on gas only. After tanks are refilled, you can purge air from the gas lines by switching the unit off and on three or four times.
The DM2852 has a limp mode. If the control can't read the temperature sensor, it runs the cooling unit continuously on whatever energy source is available. It keeps doing this until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset. The standard climate control heats the frame between the compartments. This evaporates the water droplets that form in hot, humid weather. It draws 12 V DC continuously, so turn it off when no charging source is available.
Installation must be done by qualified personnel. The floor must be solid and level, and carpet must be removed or covered with a full-size metal or wood panel. A wood strip across the top of the enclosure anchors the top frame. A sealing strip on the front frame keeps the combustion system sealed off from the living space. Any gap above the unit larger than 1-1/2 inches must be blocked so heat doesn't build up. The drain hose must not touch the boiler casing. Check the LP safety shutoff after connecting the gas, without connecting 120 V AC.
The doors accept optional decorative insert panels. To fit a panel, remove the decoration strip, slide the panel into the grooves and seat it in the bottom groove. The door swing can be reversed with dedicated hinge kits. Kits come in light brown or black, for right-to-left or left-to-right conversion. For long-term storage, an Airing Position Card holds the doors ajar to prevent odors. Wire shelves can be moved after you release their locks with a screwdriver.
For food storage, the coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is not designed for deep freezing or quick freezing. Precooled meat keeps about three times longer in the freezer than in the fresh food compartment. To defrost, switch the unit off and leave the doors open. Never use sharp tools or hot air blowers, because they can damage the ammonia system or warp parts.
A qualified technician should do maintenance at least once a year. This covers the connections, the controls, the LP gas pressure and the flue baffle. The flue should be cleaned from the top with a flue brush. Soak the burner jet in wood alcohol and blow it out with compressed air, and never clean it with a wire. The warranty requires this yearly preventive maintenance at an authorized Dometic center. It also lists reference readings, such as a thermocouple output of 25 to 35 millivolts.
