Dometic RM2351 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic RM2351 is a compact absorption refrigerator built for recreational vehicles and manufactured homes. Ammonia is liquefied in the finned condenser coil at the top rear of the unit. It then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer section, where circulating hydrogen gas makes it evaporate and produces cold. There is no compressor, so the unit runs silently. It does need correct installation and leveling to work properly.
Leveling matters because the evaporator tubing is sloped so that liquid ammonia flows downward by gravity. If the vehicle is parked off-level for several hours while the fridge is running, ammonia can collect in the tubing and slow or block circulation, and cooling is lost. The manual says the vehicle only needs to be level enough to be comfortable to live in. While driving, leveling is not critical because the vehicle's rolling movement keeps the ammonia flowing.
The control panel has a main power ON/OFF button, an AUTO/GAS mode selector, an AUTO indicator lamp and a CHECK lamp. In AUTO mode, the controller uses AC power when it is available and switches to LP gas when it is not. If the burner fails to ignite, the CHECK lamp lights up. To reset it, turn the main power off and then on again. After the LP tanks are refilled, you may need to repeat this three or four times to purge trapped air from the gas lines.
A useful safety feature is the limp mode. If the controller cannot read the temperature sensor, it runs the cooling unit continuously on whichever energy source is available. The refrigerator keeps working this way until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset, so your food stays cold while you wait for service. After the gas line is connected, the gas safety shutoff must be tested with a bubble solution applied to the burner jet orifice.
For installation, the unit goes into a sturdy, level enclosure. A sealing strip separates the combustion system from the living space. Do not place the unit directly on carpet. You must also block the gap above the refrigerator so heat does not get trapped there. A drain water hose runs through a hole drilled in the floor and must not kink. The door is supplied without a decorative panel. You slide a panel into the door grooves and hold it in place with plastic stops and a decoration strip. A separate hinge kit lets you reverse the door swing.
The coldest spots in the fresh-food section are under the cooling fins and at the bottom. The upper door shelves are the warmest. Cover foods with strong odors. The freezer stores frozen food and makes ice, but it is not designed for quick-freezing. Ice forms faster when the tray sits directly on the freezer floor. To defrost, empty the fridge and leave the drip tray in place. Never use hot air blowers or sharp tools, because they can damage the ammonia system.
The manual recommends maintenance once or twice a year. This includes clearing obstructions from the vents, brushing dust off the coils, checking gas connections for leaks and confirming the regulator pressure. A qualified technician should clean the flue baffle and burner. The flame should burn clear blue. Clean the jet by soaking it in wood alcohol, never with a wire. For storage, empty and clean the unit and leave the doors ajar.
