Dometic RM2354 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic RM2354 is an absorption refrigerator for recreational vehicles and manufactured homes. Ammonia liquefies in a finned condenser at the top rear of the unit, then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer, where circulating hydrogen gas makes it evaporate and produce cold. Because this works by gravity, leveling matters. If the vehicle is parked and not level, ammonia can collect in the evaporator tubing and cooling can stop. The vehicle only needs to be level enough to live in comfortably. While driving, the motion of the vehicle prevents this problem.
The control panel has a main ON/OFF button, a DC mode selector, an AUTO/GAS selector and a temperature selector. Indicator lamps show AC, DC, GAS, AUTO and CHECK status. In AUTO mode, the system picks between AC and gas, with AC taking priority. It switches back to AC as soon as AC power returns. DC mode overrides all other modes and must be selected by hand. One thermostat controls both gas and electric operation, so you don't need to readjust it when the energy source changes.
The control system has a limp mode that keeps the fridge cooling when a major part fails. If the display module stops working, the system runs fully automatically, chooses the best available energy source and holds the temperature at the mid setting. If the temperature sensor fails, the cooling unit runs continuously on the selected energy source until a new sensor is installed. When gas ignition fails, the CHECK lamp lights. To reset, press the main power button OFF and then ON. After refilling the tanks, you may need to reset three or four times to purge air from the lines.
Installation requires a complete combustion seal between the front frame and the enclosure. Sealing strips go on the frame and on the front of the enclosure floor. Don't install the fridge directly on carpet. The space above the fridge must be blocked off so heat doesn't get trapped there. A drain water hose runs through a drilled floor hole and must not kink. After you connect the gas, test the gas safety shutoff: close the manual valve, wait one minute, then check the burner jet with bubble solution. Bubbles mean the shutoff is defective.
The food compartment is closed and unventilated, so cover foods with strong odors. The coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the fridge. The upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is not built for deep freezing. Meat and fish should be pre-cooled first, and they keep about three times longer in the freezer than in the fresh food section. To make ice faster, put the trays in direct contact with the freezer floor and set the thermostat to its coldest setting for a while.
To defrost, switch the unit off, leave the drip tray in place and open the doors. Putting trays of hot water in the freezer speeds things up. Never use a hot air blower or sharp tools, because they can warp parts or puncture the ammonia system. Clean the interior with a weak lukewarm soda solution. Use only warm water on the evaporator, gasket, trays and shelves. If the fridge will sit unused for weeks, empty it, defrost and clean it, and leave the doors ajar.
A qualified technician should do maintenance once or twice a year. This includes checking the vents for nests or webs, brushing the condenser coils, leak-testing the gas connections and checking the gas pressure. The flue should be cleaned with a flue brush, not compressed air. Soak the burner jet in wood alcohol, and never clean it with a wire or pin. A correct flame is clear blue over the burner slots. To reverse the door swing you need a special Hinge Kit, available in light brown or black.
