Dometic DM2683 Refrigerator Details

The Dometic DM2683 is the three-way model in Dometic's DM refrigerator line for recreational vehicles. It has an automatic energy selector system that picks the best power source available. Owners can run it fully automatic with AUTO mode on, or limit it to LP gas by turning AUTO off. DC mode overrides every other mode, and all other indicator lamps turn off while it is active. The manual says to switch back to AUTO or GAS when the house battery is not charging, because 12 VDC operation drains the battery quickly.

A key safety feature is limp mode, which keeps the unit cooling if a major part fails. If the display module stops working, the control system switches to full automatic operation and holds the temperature at the middle setting. Meanwhile, the power module keeps trying to restore the display. If the temperature sensor fails, the refrigerator stays on the energy source selected on the panel and runs the cooling unit nonstop. It stays in that state until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset.

When LP gas ignition fails, the CHECK lamp blinks and the unit beeps. To reset it, turn the refrigerator off for five seconds and then back on. The alert keeps going until the restart, even if 120 VAC becomes available, although the unit will run on AC in the meantime. After a long period out of use or a tank refill, air may be trapped in the gas lines. You can repeat the OFF/ON sequence up to four times to purge it.

For food storage, the coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The warmest spots are the upper door shelves. Let hot food cool to room temperature before putting it in, and leave space for air to circulate. The freezer is not designed for deep- or quick-freezing. Put ice cream at the bottom of the aluminum liner, and pre-cool meat or fish in the fresh food section first. To make ice faster, set the thermostat to its highest setting, then return it to normal.

The refrigerator must be level when the RV is parked for several hours. Running noticeably out of level can cause a loss of cooling, but leveling is not critical while driving. Cooling may drop in sub-zero weather, which is normal for absorption units. The wire shelves can be moved: remove the shelf locks with a flat-bladed screwdriver, slide the shelf out, and snap it back in place using the plastic caps. On ice maker versions, a bale arm turns ice production on and off, and an adjusting screw changes cube size.

Maintenance is split between owners and qualified technicians. Owners clean, defrost and winterize the unit and change the fuses. Technicians check the gas connections and control system and clean the burner. Clean the interior with a lukewarm baking soda solution, and use only warm water on the evaporator, gasket and shelves. Never use a hot-air blower to defrost. An included door airing position card keeps the doors latched but slightly open during storage. Even when switched off, the controls draw a few milliamps, so disconnect or charge the batteries during winter storage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic DM2683 Refrigerator, and we answer them below.

What energy sources can the Dometic DM2683 use?
The DM2683 is a three-way model. It runs on 120 VAC, LP gas, or 12 VDC. In AUTO mode it chooses between AC and LP gas on its own, and AC has priority.

What is the storage capacity of the DM2683?
The DM2683 has a total refrigerated volume of 6 cubic feet.

Why is the CHECK lamp blinking and beeping?
It means the LP gas burner did not light within about 45 seconds. Turn the refrigerator off for five seconds and then on again. If it keeps happening, make sure the LP tanks are not empty and the manual shutoff valves are open.

Can I leave the refrigerator in DC mode for long periods?
Only while the house battery is being charged. Running on 12 VDC drains the battery quickly, so switch to AUTO or GAS mode when there is no charging.

Can I run the DM2683 on LP gas at high altitudes?
Above 5,500 feet, LP gas operation may cool less well and the burner may go out. The manual recommends using electric power at those altitudes.

What fuses does the DM2683 use?
Three-way models have three fuses: 3 A for the control system, 5 A for the AC heater and 30 A for the 12 VDC heater. The control system fuse is resettable and must not be replaced with a standard fuse.

What happens if the temperature sensor fails?
The refrigerator goes into limp mode. It keeps running on the selected energy source with the cooling unit on continuously until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset.

How do I make ice faster?
Set the thermostat to its highest setting and put the ice trays in direct contact with the freezer compartment. Once the ice has formed, return the thermostat to its normal setting.

What are the water supply requirements for the ice maker?
Models with an ice maker need a water supply of at least 15 psig, a 1/4 inch water line to the valve, and a manual shutoff valve in an easy-to-reach spot.

What should I do if the refrigerator smells of ammonia?
Turn the refrigerator off at the front panel right away and do not open the doors. Open the RV windows and doors and leave the vehicle. Then shut off the LP gas valve, disconnect the 120 VAC power and contact a Dometic service center.

Does the refrigerator need to be level?
Yes, when the RV is parked for several hours or more. Running out of level can cause a loss of cooling. Leveling is not critical while traveling.

How long is the warranty on the DM2683?
The refrigerator has a limited two-year warranty covering labor, specified parts and freight. To keep it valid, the owner must have yearly preventive maintenance done at an authorized Dometic service center.
