Dometic Blizzard NXT H540315 Details

The Dometic Blizzard NXT H540315 is a roof top air conditioner built for RV manufacturers to install while the vehicle is being built. All initial installations must be approved by Dometic Corporation. The manual says one person can do most of the work, with brief help from others when lifting the unit onto the roof. Dometic warns that the unit must not be modified in any way, and only accessories authorized in writing by Dometic may be added.

Location affects performance. For a single unit, Dometic recommends mounting it slightly forward of center (front to back) and centered from side to side. For two units, one goes one third and the other two thirds of the way back from the front of the RV. Before cutting, installers should look for obstructions both on the roof and inside the RV, such as door openings, room dividers, curtains and ceiling fixtures that could block the return air grille.

Roof preparation includes safety steps: shut off the gas supply, disconnect 120 Vac power and disconnect the positive 12 Vdc battery terminal before drilling or cutting. Installers must never create a low spot on the roof, because pooled water can leak in. The opening is framed so it does not collapse when the unit is bolted down and does not draw air from the roof cavity. Leave an entrance hole at the front of the opening for the wiring.

The ducting must hold its shape during and after installation, and it must be insulated and sealed to prevent condensation. Return air has to be filtered so dirt does not build up on the cooling coil. Dometic recommends a basic duct configuration based on its testing. The installer is still responsible for choosing duct size, layout, register size, register location and thermostat location for each floor plan. Other configurations need written approval from Dometic.

Two control platforms are supported. The CCC 2 (Comfort Control Center 2) uses a 4 conductor communication cable with RJ-11-6C4P connectors. It can manage up to four zones and works with an optional indoor temperature sensor, an Energy Management System load shed input and an Automatic Generator Start kit. The LCD SZ single zone system uses a 3 conductor cable wired to the 12V+, 12V– and COMMS terminals on the thermostat.

Installation inside the RV includes fitting a divider plate. The perforated tab is removed when the ceiling-to-roof thickness is 2.0″ to 3-3/4″. A self-adhesive insulation strip measuring 1/8″ x 7″ x 18″ seals the plate so cold discharge air does not flow back into the return. If the divider plate is installed incorrectly, the compressor can quick-cycle. The freeze control sensor goes into the evaporator fins about 2-1/2″ up from the bottom and 2-1/2″ in from the right side.

The electronic control box is configured with dip switches for zone assignment, heat pump and furnace options. Ext. Stage, Stage, Heat Strip, Dehumidify and Gen Start stay OFF on this unit. On CCC 2 systems, a reset (pressing MODE and Zone together) registers the configuration. The furnace or Aqua differential can be set to 1°F or 2°F. To reduce heat gain, Dometic suggests parking in shade, using window shades, starting the unit early and running it on High Fan/Cooling.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic Blizzard NXT H540315 Air Conditioner, and we answer them below.

What is the cooling capacity of the Dometic Blizzard NXT H540315?
The H540315 has a nominal cooling capacity of 13,500 BTU/hr. It runs on 120 Vac, 60 Hz, single phase power.

What size generator do I need for this air conditioner?
Dometic's general guideline is a 3.5 kW generator for one unit and 5.0 kW for two units. You also need to count the total power use of the RV. Generators lose power at high altitude and when they are poorly maintained.

What circuit protection and wire size are required?
The unit needs its own 20 A time delay fuse or circuit breaker and at least 12 AWG copper wire with ground, for runs up to 24 ft. For longer runs, check the National Electrical Code for the correct wire size.

How big is the roof opening?
The roof opening is 14-1/4″ x 14-1/4″ (±1/8″). It has to be finished according to NFPA 1192 and framed with stock at least 3/4″ thick.

What roof thickness and structure are required?
The distance from roof to ceiling must be between 2 and 5 inches. Rafters or joists must be on at least 16 inch centers. The roof must support 130 lb while the RV is moving, which a 200 lb static load design normally meets.

Can the unit be installed on a sloped roof?
Yes, as long as the tilt is no more than 15° in any direction, measured with the RV parked on level ground. A relatively flat, level roof section is preferred.

How tight should the mounting bolts be?
Tighten all four mounting bolts evenly to 40-50 inch-pounds. This compresses the roof gasket to about 3/4″. Too much torque can damage the base pan or ceiling template, and too little can leave a poor roof seal that leaks.

Which refrigerant and charge does the H540315 use?
The unit uses R-410A refrigerant with a factory charge of 19.5 oz.

Which thermostats are compatible?
You can use the CCC 2 thermostat (3314082.000 Black or 3314082.011 White) with control kit 3312020.000. You can also use the LCD SZ thermostat (3313192.000 White or 3313192.019 Black) with control kit 3313189.000 or 3313189.015.

How many zones can the CCC 2 system control?
Each CCC 2 thermostat can control up to 4 zones. The first unit is Zone 1 and needs no dip switch setting. Each additional unit is assigned Zone 2, 3 or 4 with the dip switches.

Where should the thermostat be mounted?
Mount it 54″ above the floor on an inside partition, away from direct heat, outside doors, windows and supply registers. If every zone has the optional indoor temperature sensor (CCC 2 only), the thermostat can go anywhere convenient.

What are the duct requirements?
Ducts need at least 21.0 sq. in. of cross section, a depth of 1-1/2″ to 2-1/2″, a width of 7″ to 10″ and a total length of 15 to 40 ft. They also need R-7 insulation and at least 4 supply registers with 14 sq. in. of free area each.

How do I set the furnace temperature differential?
On the CCC 2 thermostat, press PROGRAM and the up button together for a 1°F differential ("diF1"). Press PROGRAM and the down button together for 2°F ("diF2").

Is Dometic responsible for condensation damage?
No. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage from condensation on ceilings, windows or other surfaces. Keeping doors and windows closed while the unit runs greatly reduces condensation.
