Drayton LP722 Thermostat Details

The Drayton LP722 is sold as a thermostat, but it is really the top model of the Lifestyle programmer range. It is a 7-day dual channel programmer that switches central heating and hot water on and off separately. You can give each day of the week its own timings, which helps when the house is occupied at different times on different days. Drayton says this kind of control can noticeably reduce energy costs.

The programmer comes with a factory-set standard program. On weekdays both channels run from 6.30am to 8.30am and from 4.30pm to 10.30pm. At weekends they run from 7.00am to 9.00am and from 4.00pm to 11.00pm. The second period, ON2 and OFF2, starts and ends at 12.00pm, so it does nothing until you change it. To go back to these factory times at any point, press SET and + together.

To program the unit, use the SET?, YES/- and + buttons under the bottom flap. The display walks you through the steps: set all weekdays, then optionally adjust single days, then set the weekend. Central heating comes first, then hot water. A short press of the buttons changes the time in 1-minute steps, and holding them down changes it in 10-minute steps. If you press nothing for two minutes, the unit goes back to normal operation.

Timings must be entered in order, from ON1 through to OFF3. If they get out of order, the display flashes a warning. ON1 cannot be the last timing before midnight. OFF3 can fall after midnight, as long as it is no more than 23 hours 59 minutes after ON1. A built-in TEST? function runs through the whole week's program. At each switching point it stops and turns on the matching lights and circuits so you can check them.

Each channel has its own Advance/Boost button for quick changes. Advance moves the channel on to its next ON or OFF period, and it only works in TIMED or ONCE mode. Pressing and holding Boost adds one, two or three hours, shown as BST on the screen. Each channel also has a SELECT button to choose OFF, TIMED, ONCE or ON. Changing the mode does not affect your saved timings.

Holiday mode switches the system off for a set number of days and turns it back on in time for your return. The unit counts each pass through midnight as one day. For example, if you leave on Saturday morning and want heat again on Tuesday morning, set 3 days. The clock is set at the factory and changes for British Summer Time automatically. The weekday is worked out from the date, so if the day shown is wrong, reset the date.

Installation must be done by a qualified electrician or heating engineer. A link on the back of the unit sets the system type: P for fully pumped systems or G for gravity-fed hot water. The LP722 uses an industry-standard wall plate and the same terminal layout as many other programmers, so it can often replace an older unit without rewiring. The installation instructions include wiring diagrams for gravity, mid-position valve and two-valve systems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Drayton LP722 Thermostat, and we answer them below.

Can the heating and hot water run at different times?
Yes. The LP722 controls central heating and hot water separately, with up to 3 periods per day on each channel and different timings for every day of the week. On a gravity system with the link set to G, you cannot run the heating without the hot water.

How do I restore the factory program?
Press SET and + at the same time. This brings back the pre-set standard program.

Why does the second heating period not switch anything?
In the standard program, ON2 and OFF2 are both set to 12.00pm, so that period does nothing. Set ON2 and OFF2 to different times to use it.

What is the difference between Advance and Boost?
Advance moves the channel on to its next ON or OFF period, and it only works in TIMED or ONCE mode. Boost turns the channel on, or keeps it on, for an extra 1, 2 or 3 hours. Press Boost again to cancel it.

What does the ONCE mode do?
ONCE runs the channel as one continuous period each day, from the start of ON1 to the end of OFF3.

Will I lose my settings during a power cut?
No. The display goes blank, but the time and your program are always kept.

Do I need to change the clock for summer time?
No. The clock adjusts for British Summer Time automatically. You can switch the DLS setting on or off in the date menu.

How do I set the holiday mode?
Press SET? three times until you see SET H'DAY?, then press YES. Use + and - to choose the number of days and press SET. The unit counts each pass through midnight as one day.

What fuse does the LP722 need?
The mains input must have a 3A fuse. Each switch is rated 2(1)A at 230V a.c.

Does the unit need an earth connection?
No. It is double-insulated. An earth continuity (loop) terminal is provided for convenience.

What clearance is required when installing it?
Leave 70mm to the right of the wall plate and 25mm above it, plus enough room underneath to reach the securing screws. Do not use a surface mounting box.

Where is the best place to mount the programmer?
About 1.4m above floor level, with reasonable lighting and good access. Avoid condensation and extreme temperatures, and use a surface that fully covers the back of the unit.
