Drayton LP522 Thermostat Details
The Drayton LP522 is sold as a thermostat, but it is really a 5/2-day dual-channel programmer from the Lifestyle range. It switches central heating and hot water on and off according to time periods you choose. It does not sense room temperature. That job stays with the room and cylinder thermostats, so heating will not run if the room thermostat has switched it off, and hot water will not heat once the cylinder thermostat is satisfied.
From the factory, the LP522 runs a standard program where heating and hot water work together. On weekdays it switches ON at 6.30am, OFF at 8.30am, ON at 4.30pm and OFF at 10.30pm. At weekends it uses 7.00am to 9.00am and 4.00pm to 11.00pm. The middle period, ON2 and OFF2, is set to 12.00pm for both times, so it does nothing until you change it. To return to this program at any point, press SET and + together.
Programming follows a fixed order. Press SET? to see "SET PROG?", then press YES to work through four blocks in turn: CH Monday to Friday, HW Monday to Friday, CH Saturday and Sunday, and HW Saturday and Sunday. You change times with the – and + buttons in 1-minute steps, or in 10-minute steps if you hold the button down. To keep a time as it is, press SET? to skip it. If you press nothing for two minutes, the unit goes back to normal operation.
There are some rules for setting times. Periods must be entered in order (ON1, OFF1, ON2, OFF2, ON3, OFF3), and the display flashes a warning if they are out of order. ON1 cannot be the last timing before midnight. OFF3 can be after midnight as long as it is no more than 23 hours 59 minutes after ON1. The Advance button moves a channel on to its next ON or OFF point and shows ADV. It only works in TIMED or ONCE mode.
Each channel has its own Boost button. Press and hold it to add one hour, shown as BST on the display. Press again for two or three hours, and press once more to cancel. Each channel also has its own SELECT button for the OFF, TIMED, ONCE and ON modes. Changing the mode never deletes your stored times. You can go back to them simply by selecting TIMED again.
The holiday switch-off turns the system off for a set number of days. Each pass through midnight counts as one day, so leaving on Saturday morning and wanting heat again on Tuesday morning means setting 3 days. The clock is set at the factory and changes for British Summer Time on its own, using the DLS setting. The day of the week is worked out from the date, so if the weekday is wrong, you need to correct the date. The backlit LCD and red LEDs show when each channel is on.
The unit must be installed by a qualified electrician or heating engineer. It clips onto an industry-standard wall-plate, and in many cases it can replace an older programmer without changing the existing wiring. The P/G link on the back must match the system type. Always switch off the mains before removing the unit, and never fit it to a live wall-plate. The LP522Si version adds a boiler service reminder: it gives a warning 30 days before the service is due and lowers the comfort level if the service is not done.
