Drayton RTS4 Thermostat Details
The Drayton RTS4 is part of the RTS range. The range uses electronic sensing to control room temperature and covers most home heating jobs. What sets the RTS4 apart is its volt-free changeover switch. One contact closes when the room needs heat, and the other closes when the heating is satisfied or when cooling is needed. Drayton's sales literature says the RTS4 is suitable for combi boilers. That makes it a good choice when a boiler needs a dry switch contact rather than a live 230V output.
The manual stresses one point: the RTS4 is an electronic thermostat with a relay output, not a mechanical one. Unless it is connected to a 230V mains supply, the relay will not work. You will hear no click, and the call for heat contact will stay open. Installers testing the unit on the bench, or checking it before the supply is on, should expect this. It does not mean the thermostat is faulty. A neutral connection to terminal N is essential for the electronics to run.
Because the output contacts are voltage-free, terminal 1 (common) needs its own supply if the switched circuit needs mains voltage. You can do this by fitting a link between terminals L and 1, or by using a separate supply protected by a 3A fuse. Terminal 3 then gives the call for heat, and terminal 2 gives the heating satisfied or call for cooling signal. Drayton points out that the contacts are not SELV, so the wiring must follow fixed-wiring practice.
Where you put the thermostat affects how well it works. It should not be in direct sunlight or draughts. An inside wall is best, where the unit can sense the real room temperature away from radiators or other heat sources. To fit it, loosen the securing screws and remove the wall-plate. If you are using surface wiring, snap out the cable entry strip with pliers. Then fix the wall-plate with the terminals at the top.
Under the control knob is a mechanism for range limiting and set point locking. This suits landlords, offices and public buildings where users should not be able to change the settings freely. First set the temperature you want, then carefully pull off the knob. Lift and rotate the two limiting arms into the notches you need. Refit the knob with the chosen temperature lined up against the setting mark.
The RTS range is designed to replace earlier ACL and Drayton room thermostats, up to a maximum load of 2(1)A 230V ac. The manual includes cross-reference tables for wiring. They map RTS4 terminals to older models such as the ACL TS142 and TA350 and the Drayton RT and RTE. They also cover thermostats from Danfoss Randall, Honeywell, Potterton, Sunvic, Horstman, Landis & Gyr, Sopac, Switchmaster and Tower. This makes it much easier to swap the RTS4 in for an older unit.
The earthing continuity (loop) terminal is there only for convenience, because the unit is double insulated. When the thermostat reaches the end of its life, do not put it in household waste. Take it to an electronic waste recycling point, and check with your local authority if you are not sure. Drayton offers technical help by phone, on its website and by email at customer.care@draytoncontrols.co.uk. The manufacturer may change the design and specifications without notice.
