Dometic RM2554 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic RM2554 is a 3-way absorption refrigerator made for RVs. It has no compressor. Ammonia condenses in the finned coil at the top rear of the unit, then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer, where circulating hydrogen gas makes it evaporate and produce cold. The evaporator tubing slopes so the liquid ammonia keeps moving down by gravity. Because of this, the vehicle has to be level whenever it is parked for several hours. While the RV is moving, the normal rocking keeps ammonia from collecting in the tubing.
The automatic energy selector system picks the best power source available. In AUTO mode, 120 V AC has priority over LP gas. If AC power is lost, the control switches to gas, and it switches back to AC as soon as AC returns. You can also run the unit on gas only, or select DC mode manually. DC mode overrides every other mode. Use it only while the house battery is being charged, because running on 12 V DC drains the battery quickly.
The control system also has a limp mode for component failures. If the display module stops working, the control runs fully automatically with AC, DC and gas priority and holds the temperature at the mid setting. If the temperature sensor fails, the cooling unit runs continuously on the selected energy source until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset. One thermostat controls both gas and electric operation, so you do not have to reset it when the energy source changes.
Installation needs a solid, level floor and a substantial enclosure. Do not install the refrigerator directly on carpeting. A wood strip must run across the upper opening of the enclosure so the top frame can be screwed to it. A sealing strip on the front frame keeps the combustion system isolated from the living space. Block any gap of more than 1-1/2 inches above the refrigerator, because trapped heat makes the top hot and lowers efficiency. Run the drain water hose through the floor so it does not touch the boiler casing.
After connecting to LP gas, you must test the gas safety shut-off. Close the manual valve while the unit runs in GAS mode. After about six minutes, the CHECK lamp should light. Then open the valve and apply a bubble solution to the burner jet orifice. If bubbles appear, service is needed. To purge air from the lines after refilling the tanks, switch the unit off and on, up to three or four times.
In the freezer, quick-frozen soft fruits and ice cream belong at the bottom of the aluminum liner, which is its coldest spot. Precooled meat or fish keeps about three times longer in the freezer than in the fresh food section. The coldest spots in the fresh food compartment are under the cooling fins and at the bottom. The warmest are the upper door shelves. Ice forms faster when the trays sit directly on the freezer floor and the thermostat is at its highest setting.
To defrost, switch the unit off, empty it and place the drip tray under the evaporator. Hot water in the ice trays speeds up melting. Never use sharp tools, which can puncture the ammonia system, or hot air blowers. Clean the interior with a lukewarm, weak soda solution. Once or twice a year, check the vents for nests and dust off the rear coils. Separate kits let you reverse the door from right to left or left to right, in light brown or black.
