Dometic NDR1292 Refrigerator Details

The Dometic NDR1292 is the largest model in this Dometic absorption refrigerator range. It is a two-door, side-by-side unit with separate frozen food and fresh food compartments. It cools without a compressor: heat from an electric heater or an LP gas burner drives ammonia through a finned condenser and into the evaporator, where circulating hydrogen makes it evaporate and cool the freezer. On first start-up, the cooling cycle can take up to four hours to become fully operational.

Installation calls for care because of the vacuum insulated panels in the top, back, bottom, sides and doors. If a panel is punctured, insulation is lost and cooling suffers. The warranty does not cover punctures after receipt. The unit must sit level on a solid floor inside a substantial enclosure, never directly on carpet. A wood strip across the upper opening anchors the top frame, and a sealing strip on the front frame separates the combustion system from the living space.

The NDR1292 has its own securing sequence. First, two screws go through the front base, one through each hinge, after the lower front strip is slid under the bottom hinge plate. Second, the four screws holding the top decoration panel are removed so the top frame screws can be fitted, and the openings are sealed with aluminum tape. Third, two screws go into the rear base. Any gap above the unit wider than 1-1/2 inches should be blocked so heat does not get trapped there.

The control panel has an ON/OFF button, an AES/AUTO/GAS selector and a temperature selector. In AES/AUTO mode, AC power has priority, and the unit switches to gas by itself when AC is lost. If ignition fails, the CHECK lamp lights; pressing ON/OFF off and back on resets it. Two limp modes keep the unit cooling if the display module or the temperature sensor fails.

The climate control uses 12 V DC to evaporate condensation on the metal frame between the two compartments in hot, humid weather. The low ambient control keeps the unit running reliably when temperatures stay below 50°F for long periods and should be switched off above 50°F. These switches are located beneath the top decoration panel, or they appear as CLC and LAC buttons on the control panel.

Inside, the coldest areas are under the cooling fins and at the bottom, while the upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is not designed for deep or quick freezing. Spare parts listed for this model include a two-piece bottle holder, crisper and meat locker boxes, a six-piece door shelf set and a freezer door shelf. To defrost, switch the unit off, empty it, leave the doors open and place the drip tray under the finned evaporator. Never use sharp tools or hot air blowers.

For maintenance, the vents, coils and flue should be inspected once or twice a year. A qualified service technician should check the connections, controls, gas pressure and flue baffle every year. Before the gas safety shutoff test, bubble checks and burner jet cleaning are done in wood alcohol. The warranty requires a yearly preventive maintenance visit at a Dometic Authorized Service Center.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic NDR1292 Refrigerator, and we answer them below.

What is the storage capacity of the Dometic NDR1292?
The NDR1292 has a total refrigerated volume of 12 cu.ft, the largest in this Dometic manual.

Can the NDR1292 run on 12 V DC for cooling?
No. The NDR1292 cools on 120 V AC or LP gas. It still needs a continuous 12 V DC supply for the electronic controls, which work down to 9.6 V DC.

What recess size is required for installation?
The recess must be 59-1/16 in high, 32-3/4 in wide and 24 in deep (1500 x 832 x 610 mm). Add 1 in (25 mm) of depth for units with one or two optional ventilator fans.

Which vent kit is certified for the NDR1292?
Kit 5A. It includes a roof base, a roof cover, the lower side vent 3103649.XXX and the power vent assembly 3108705.744. The minimum ventilation height is 65 in (1651 mm).

Can I reverse the door swing on the NDR1292?
No. The manual states that door reversal applies to all models except the NDR1292.

Why does the CHECK lamp light up?
It means the control failed to ignite the burner in gas mode. Press the ON/OFF button off and then on again to restart the ignition sequence. If the problem continues, check the LP gas supply and the shutoff valves.

When should I use the low ambient control?
Turn it on when temperatures stay below 50°F for long periods, and switch it off once the outdoor temperature rises above 50°F.

What is the climate control for?
It uses 12 V DC to evaporate water droplets that form on the frame between the freezer and the fresh food compartment in hot, humid weather. Turn it off when no charging source is available.

What gas pressure does the refrigerator need?
The correct operating pressure is 11 inches water column, measured at the test port just ahead of the burner jet.

Why is my refrigerator not cooling well when parked?
An absorption refrigerator has to be level when the vehicle is stationary. Also check for overpacking, heavy frost, a dirty burner or flue, low gas pressure, or blown fuses.

How do I purge air from the gas lines?
Turn the refrigerator off and on with the ON/OFF button. If the flame does not light within 45 seconds, repeat this up to 3 to 4 times.

What does the warranty cover?
Major components are covered for three years for parts and freight and two years for labor. Coverage requires yearly preventive maintenance at a Dometic Authorized Service Center.
