Dometic RM2454 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic RM2454 is an absorption refrigerator for recreational vehicles and manufactured homes. It has no compressor. A heat source drives liquid ammonia through a finned condenser coil at the top rear of the unit and into the evaporator in the freezer section, where circulating hydrogen gas makes the ammonia evaporate and produce cold. Because the cooling unit has no moving parts, it runs quietly. That suits small living spaces where noise matters.
The control panel has four buttons: main power ON/OFF, DC mode selector, AUTO/GAS mode selector and temperature selector. Indicator lamps show DC, AC, GAS, AUTO and CHECK status, and a five-step scale runs from COLD to COLDEST. In AUTO mode, the system picks AC power first and switches to LP gas when AC is lost. It goes back to AC as soon as AC power returns. DC mode overrides all other modes and must be turned off manually.
A useful feature is the limp mode. If the display module fails, the control keeps running in full automatic mode, uses the best available energy source and holds the temperature at the mid position. Meanwhile, it keeps trying to restore the display. If the temperature sensor fails, the cooling unit runs continuously on the energy source you selected until a new sensor is fitted and the system is reset.
Leveling matters for good performance. When the vehicle is parked, liquid ammonia can collect in the sloped evaporator tubing and block circulation. The floor only needs to be level enough to live on comfortably, with no noticeable slope. While driving, leveling is not critical, because the vehicle's motion keeps the ammonia moving. One thermostat controls both gas and electric operation, so you don't need to change the setting when the energy source changes.
Inside, the food compartment is fully closed and unventilated. The coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom. The upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is for storing frozen food and making ice, not for quick freezing. Meat and fish keep about three times longer in the freezer than in the fresh food section. Ice forms faster when the trays sit directly on the freezer floor.
To defrost, switch the unit off, leave the drip tray in place and open the doors. Putting trays of hot water in the freezer speeds this up. Never use hot air blowers or sharp tools, because they can warp parts or puncture the ammonia system. Clean the liner with a weak lukewarm soda solution, and use only warm water on the evaporator, gasket, trays and shelves. For long-term storage, empty and dry the unit and leave the doors ajar.
For installation, the refrigerator is secured with six screws in a set order: front base, top frame, then rear base. A sealing strip separates the combustion system from the living space. The door is convertible, with reversing kits in light brown or black. Dometic recommends a qualified technician inspect the unit once or twice a year. The inspection covers the vents, coils, gas connections, regulator pressure, flue baffle and burner.
