Innova 5512 OBD2 Scanner Details

The Innova 5512 reads more than basic engine codes. Its System Menu retrieves OEM enhanced DTCs, ABS codes and SRS codes for most BMW, Chrysler/Jeep, Ford/Mazda, GM/Isuzu, Honda/Acura, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota/Lexus, Volkswagen and Volvo vehicles. A Network Scan can check every module at once with All Module Scan, which shows how many DTCs each module has stored. You can also scan one module chosen from groups such as Drive, Chassis or Body. When the scanner can't decode the VIN, you pick the make yourself.

The Service Reset menu covers common maintenance jobs. It can reset the oil maintenance light, and if the automatic reset fails, it shows the manual procedure instead. Battery Reset can show battery procedures or run a battery reset OBD service on BMW, Ford, Volvo, Audi and Volkswagen models. On Audi and Volkswagen vehicles, the tool codes the new battery's part number, manufacturer and serial number. Steering Angle Sensor Calibration works on BMW, Chrysler, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo. ABS Bleeding supports Chrysler, GM, Hyundai/Kia, Mazda and Toyota. The menu also includes an electronic parking brake (EPB) reset.

The Service Check screen shows engine oil level, remaining oil life, brake pad condition and transmission fluid temperature. The battery test menu checks the battery and alternator on conventional vehicles. On EV, HEV and PHEV models, it shows a graph of the state of charge for every cell in the battery pack. The battery test uses voltage thresholds of 11.8 V and 12.1 V to judge whether the battery is charged enough. The alternator test runs with the engine held at 2000 RPM and the headlights on.

Advanced OBD2 functions are in the System Tests menu. They include O2 Sensor Monitor (Mode $05) results and OBD Monitor Test (Mode $06) results with Test ID, Module ID, Component ID, and minimum and maximum limits. The tool compares each test value with its limit and reports it as Low, High or OK. Request Control (Mode $08) can start an EVAP leak test, a particulate filter regeneration or an inducement system reinitialization. You can view I/M Readiness for either Since DTCs Cleared or This Drive Cycle.

The Vehicle Information menu shows the VIN, calibration IDs, CVNs, a list of available modules and In-use Performance Tracking statistics. The IPT statistics include the OBDCOND and IGNCNTR counters. A DLC Locator shows where the diagnostic port is by model year, make and model, whether it's covered, and includes a picture. The Tool Library contains OBD1 and OBD2 DTC definitions, explanations of the monitor icons and LEDs, and a QR code for installing the free RepairSolutions2 app.

The RepairSolutions2 app pairs with the scanner over Bluetooth. It offers verified fixes from ASE technicians, predicted repairs for the next 12 months, TSBs and NHTSA recalls, vehicle health reports and upcoming maintenance, and you can buy parts directly in the app. For older Ford vehicles, the tool runs the KOEO, KOER, Timing Check, Cylinder Balance, Output State and Wiggle tests. The timing check confirms that timing advances 20° (±3°) above base timing. Settings let you change the audible tone, footer messages, hotkey legends and the I/M program state.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Innova 5512 OBD2 Scanner, and we answer them below.

What batteries does the Innova 5512 use?
It uses three AA-size batteries, and the manual recommends Alkaline batteries for longer life. The battery cover is on the back of the tool. The manual's OBD1 section also mentions inserting AAA batteries before Chrysler/Jeep and GM tests, so check the battery compartment to confirm which size your unit takes.

Can the Innova 5512 read ABS and SRS codes?
Yes. Choose ABS or SRS from the System Menu. The manual doesn't list the covered makes for these functions and refers you to the manufacturer's website instead.

Does the scanner work on older pre-1996 vehicles?
Yes. It covers OBD1 vehicles built from 1981 to 1995 by Chrysler/Jeep, Ford, GM, Honda and Toyota. It includes a DLC adaptor for each of these makes and an OBD1 extension cable.

Can I use it on heavy-duty trucks?
Yes. It supports HD OBD vehicles from 1985 to the present through 6-pin J1708, 9-pin J1708/J1939 and 16-pin J1939 connectors. It can scan truck modules such as the ECM, ABS, SRS, instrument cluster and SCR.

Why doesn't erasing codes clear everything?
The ERASE function clears stored codes, Freeze Frame data and manufacturer-specific enhanced data. Permanent DTCs aren't erased, and all monitors are reset to not run, so you need to complete a drive cycle before an emissions test.

How much Live Data can be recorded?
The tool records about 100 frames of Live Data. Recording can start automatically when a DTC sets, or you can start it manually. Pressing POWER/LINK while in Live Data mode deletes the recorded data.

How many vehicles can the scanner keep in memory?
It stores data for the three most recently tested vehicles. When you scan a new vehicle, the data for the oldest one is overwritten.

How do I update the firmware?
Install the INNOVA OBD Tool Updater on a Windows or Mac computer and connect the scanner with a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable. The update can take up to 25 minutes, so don't disconnect the tool until it's finished.

What should I do if the update is stuck at 1% or 5%?
Install the latest updater from Innova.com/support, restart your computer, turn off any antivirus software running in the background, and try the update again.

What do the three LEDs mean?
Green means all systems are OK and all monitors have completed. Yellow means there is a pending code or some monitors haven't run yet. Red means DTCs are present and the Check Engine Light is on.

Which languages does the display support?
The display can be set to English, French or Spanish. You choose the language during initial setup and can change it later under Tool Settings.

What warranty does the Innova 5512 have?
It has a one-year limited warranty from the date of original purchase that covers defects in materials and workmanship. You'll need proof of purchase, and service or repair takes about 3 to 4 weeks.
