Innova 6100p OBD2 Scanner Details

The Innova 6100p is a handheld diagnostic tool for vehicles that use the standard OBD2 system. After you connect the cable and turn the ignition on, it finds the vehicle's protocol and links to the computer on its own. If the tool can decode the VIN, it shows the vehicle information for you to confirm. If not, you pick the year, make, model, engine and transmission from menus. Freeze Frame data is kept for the priority code, marked "01". It records conditions such as engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel pressure, vehicle speed and intake manifold pressure.

The display is made to be read quickly. Each DTC number is color-coded: red means a permanent code, yellow means a pending code, and green confirms that no codes are stored. Other fields show the code type (Generic Stored, Pending or Permanent), which system the code belongs to (MIL, ABS or SRS), and the code's sequence number. Monitor icons are solid green when a Monitor has run and flash red when it has not. Small arrows tell you when a long definition continues and you need to scroll.

The I/M Readiness Quick Check uses the three LEDs to show whether the vehicle is likely ready for a smog check. Green means all Monitors have run and there are no codes. Yellow means there is a pending code or some Monitors haven't run yet. Red means codes are stored. When the red and yellow LEDs flash together, a permanent code is present. Only the vehicle's own computer can clear a permanent code, after the related Monitor passes. The ERASE function cannot remove it.

The System Tests menu reads the most recent O2 sensor results and non-continuous OBD Monitor results. Each result shows Test ID, Module ID, Component ID, a Min or Max limit, and a Low, High or OK status. The menu can also ask the vehicle's computer to start an EVAP leak test. On Ford vehicles, the enhanced mode includes Continuous Memory, KOEO (Key On Engine Off) and KOER (Key On Engine Running) tests. KOER tells you to turn the steering wheel, press the brake and cycle the overdrive switch.

Under Vehicle Information you can view the VIN, control module IDs, calibration IDs and Calibration Verification Numbers on 2000 and newer vehicles. It also lists available modules and In-use Performance Tracking (IPT) statistics. The built-in DLC Locator shows where the connector is, with a picture, and whether it is covered. Trip Cycle Procedures explain how to drive so that incomplete Monitors can run. The Tool Library includes a DTC definition lookup, full names for the Monitor icons and a guide to what each LED means.

Other settings let you turn the button tone on or off, show or hide the navigation footers, and view a hotkey legend. In Memory mode, you can review stored DTCs and Freeze Frame data without connecting to a vehicle. You can also upload results to RepairSolutions®, an online service. The free account gives verified fixes, diagnostic reports, TSBs and recalls, maintenance schedules and predicted repairs, with extra content available through a premium subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Innova 6100p OBD2 Scanner, and we answer them below.

Which vehicles are compatible with the Innova 6100p?
It works with all OBD2 compliant vehicles, which includes every car, light truck and SUV from 1996 and newer sold in the United States. Some 1994 and 1995 vehicles are also compliant, but only if their VECI label says "OBD II Certified".

Where is the Data Link Connector usually located?
It is usually under the driver's side of the dashboard, within 12 inches (300 mm) of the center of the panel. On some Asian and European vehicles, it is behind the ashtray or at the far left corner of the dash. You can also use the tool's built-in DLC Locator.

What batteries does the scanner use?
It uses three AA-size batteries. The manual recommends Alkaline batteries because they last longer. Replace them when the battery icon appears, or when all three LEDs light up and nothing else shows on the screen.

Can the 6100p read ABS and SRS codes?
Yes. You can read and erase ABS and SRS codes for supported makes from the System Menu. The supported makes include Acura, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Toyota and others listed in the manual.

What do the three LEDs mean?
Green means all systems are OK and all Monitors have run. Yellow means there is a pending code or some Monitors have not run yet. Red means one or more codes are stored and the Check Engine light should be on. When red and yellow flash together, a permanent code is present.

Does erasing codes clear permanent DTCs?
No. Permanent DTCs cannot be erased with the ERASE function. The vehicle's computer clears them only after the Monitor that set the code completes successfully. Erasing codes also clears Freeze Frame data and resets all Monitors to "not run".

How many codes can the tool store?
The tool can retrieve and store up to 32 codes in its memory. You can view them later in Memory mode without connecting to a vehicle. When you link the tool to a vehicle again, the old data is overwritten.

How does the battery and alternator test work?
For the battery check, the ignition is on with the engine off, the headlights are turned on, and then you start and stop the engine three times. Below 12.1 V, the tool tells you to charge the battery. For the alternator test, you hold the engine at 2000 RPM with the headlights on. The LEDs then give a pass or fail result.

Can I reset the oil maintenance light with this scanner?
Yes. Choose Oil Reset from the Main Menu for supported makes. If the tool cannot reset the light automatically, it shows the manual reset steps on the screen.

How do I connect the tool to a computer?
Download the PC-Link software from www.innova.com, then connect the tool to your PC with a Mini USB cable. Your browser opens RepairSolutions® so you can log in and view your diagnostic report.

What languages does the scanner support?
You can choose English, French or Spanish. You set the language, along with USA or Metric units, the first time you turn the tool on, and you can change both later in Tool Settings.

What warranty comes with the Innova 6100p?
The tool has a limited one-year warranty from the date of original purchase, covering defects in materials and workmanship. You need proof of purchase, and repairs take about 3 to 4 weeks.
