Innova 3320 Multimeter Details

The Innova 3320 is a general-purpose digital multimeter for household electrical work, general electronics, hobby projects and automotive electrical systems. It is designed to find electrical problems quickly. One Function/Range Selector Switch sets every mode: DCV, ACV, resistance, ACmA, DCmA, DC10A, diode, continuity, the four battery test ranges and OFF. Before measuring anything, the manual recommends checking the meter on a known source with a known value.

The front panel has three input jacks. The COM jack takes the black lead for every test. The shared red-lead jack covers Volts, mA, Ohms, BAT, Diode and Continuity. A separate DC10A jack is used only for high DC current. Always set the selector before you connect the leads. If you need to change the function during a test, take the leads off the circuit first.

To measure voltage, put the red lead on the positive side and the black lead on the negative side, across the source or load. Resistance must be measured only on de-energized circuits. For an accurate reading, disconnect at least one side of the component from the circuit. Polarity does not matter for resistance.

In diode mode, you measure the component in both directions. A good silicon diode shows a forward drop of about 0.5 to 0.8 V, and a germanium diode shows about 0.3 V. In the reverse direction, the display should show OL. In continuity mode, the beeper sounds when the resistance is low, so you can check wires without looking at the display.

Current is measured by opening the circuit and connecting the meter in series. Power the circuit down, disconnect one wire, place the leads, then power it up again. Use the mA ranges up to 200 mA and the DC10A range from 200 mA to 10 A. If the reading is negative, reverse the leads. When you finish, turn the power off before you remove the leads.

The battery tester puts a load on the battery and lights a colored LED: green means good, yellow means questionable and red means discharged. If a battery is below 10% of its rated voltage, no LED lights. The LED thresholds are averages for the most common devices, because battery life depends on how much current the device draws.

The safety guidance is extensive. Be careful above 30 V AC rms, 42 V peak or 60 V DC. Use one hand when possible and set the meter on an insulating surface. For vehicle work, the manual calls for ventilation, eye protection, blocked wheels and the ignition turned off. Readings may become unstable near spark plug wires, ignition coils or alternators, so keep the meter away from them.

Maintenance is minimal. The only user-replaceable parts are the batteries, the fuse and the test leads. To reach the batteries and fuse, remove two screws on the back. Never take apart the front panel or the circuit board. Clean the case with a damp cloth, not solvents. Warranty service goes through Innova's Technical Service Center in Irvine, California, and requires a Return Reference Number.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Innova 3320 Multimeter, and we answer them below.

What is the maximum voltage the Innova 3320 can measure?
The meter measures up to 600 V AC or DC between the COM and V jacks. The COM terminal must not be more than 300 V above ground.

Is the 10 A current range fused?
No. The DC10A range is unfused. Keep each reading under 15 seconds and wait at least 15 minutes before the next test. Never measure circuits carrying more than 10 A.

What batteries does the Innova 3320 use?
It uses two AA 1.5 V alkaline batteries. To replace them, remove the two screws on the back of the case.

Which fuse should I use as a replacement?
Use only a 0.315 A/250 V, 5x20 mm Bussmann GMA type fuse (Radio Shack #270-1046 or similar). The wrong fuse can cause injury or damage the meter.

When does the continuity beeper sound?
The beeper sounds only when the resistance between the test leads is less than about 120 ohms.

How do I know if a diode is good?
A good diode shows a voltage drop in one direction (about 0.5 to 0.8 V for silicon or about 0.3 V for germanium) and OL when the leads are reversed.

What do the battery test LEDs mean?
Green means fully charged, yellow means low or questionable, and red means discharged. If the battery is below 10% of its rated voltage, no LED lights.

Which battery sizes can be tested?
The tester has four ranges: 1.5 V, 6 V, 9 V and 12 V. Each range applies its own load current.

Why is my current reading negative?
The leads are reversed. Swap the red and black leads to get a positive reading.

Does the meter turn off automatically?
Yes. It shuts off automatically after 15 minutes without use.

Why are my readings unstable when I test a vehicle?
Radio frequency noise from spark plug wires, ignition coils or the alternator can disturb the meter. Move the multimeter as far away from these parts as you can.

What does the Innova 3320 warranty cover?
It has a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser. Call 1-800-544-4124 to get a Return Reference Number before you send the unit back.
