Dometic RM2451 Refrigerator Details

The Dometic RM2451 is a compact absorption refrigerator made for recreational vehicles and mobile homes. It has no compressor. Ammonia is liquefied in the finned condenser coil at the top rear and then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer section. There it evaporates into a circulating flow of hydrogen gas, and this produces the cold. Because the system has no moving parts, it runs silently. However, it depends on gravity, so the refrigerator must be fairly level whenever the vehicle is parked.

The vehicle only needs to be level enough to be comfortable to live in, with no noticeable slope in the floor or walls. If the vehicle sits off-level for several hours, liquid ammonia can collect in the evaporator tubing. This slows or blocks circulation, and cooling is lost. Leveling doesn't matter while the vehicle is moving, because rolling and pitching keep the ammonia flowing. The control panel is simple: a main power ON/OFF button, an AUTO/GAS mode selector, an AUTO indicator lamp and a CHECK lamp that only applies to gas operation.

In AUTO mode, the control always chooses 120 V AC over LP gas. If shore power is lost, it switches to gas automatically, and it returns to AC as soon as power comes back. If the burner fails to ignite, the CHECK lamp lights up. To reset it, turn the main power button off and then on again. After the LP tanks have been refilled or the unit has sat unused for a long time, you may need to reset three or four times to purge air from the gas lines.

A useful safety feature is the limp mode. If the control can't read the temperature sensor, it doesn't shut down. Instead, it runs the cooling unit continuously on whatever energy source is available. The refrigerator will keep working this way indefinitely, until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset. This protects your food until a repair can be made.

The fresh food compartment is fully sealed and unventilated. You should cover foods with strong smells, and foods that absorb smells easily. The coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is for storing food and making ice, not for deep freezing. Precooled meat or fish keeps about three times longer there than in the fresh food compartment. Ice forms faster when the trays sit directly on the bottom of the freezer.

To defrost, turn the unit off, empty it, and leave the drip tray in place with the doors open. Putting trays of hot water in the freezer speeds this up. Never use a hot air blower or sharp tools, because they can warp parts or puncture the ammonia system. Clean the interior with a weak, lukewarm soda solution, and use only warm water on the gaskets, shelves and evaporator. If the refrigerator will be stored for weeks, empty it, clean it and leave the doors ajar.

A qualified technician should do maintenance once or twice a year. This includes clearing the vents of nests and webs, brushing the coils, checking for gas leaks with a bubble solution, and checking the gas pressure at the test port. The flue should also be cleaned with a brush, not compressed air. A healthy flame burns clear blue over the burner slots. During installation, sealing the front frame and tightening the six screws in the specified order keeps the combustion system isolated from the living space.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic RM2451 Refrigerator, and we answer them below.

Can the Dometic RM2451 cool on 12 volt DC battery power?
No. The RM2451 cools only on 120 V AC or LP gas. It still needs a continuous 12 V DC supply to run its electronic controls, which work down to 9.6 V DC.

What is the difference between AUTO and GAS mode?
In AUTO mode, the control picks between AC and LP gas automatically and always prefers AC. GAS mode runs on LP gas only, and the AUTO indicator lamp stays off.

What does the CHECK indicator lamp mean?
It means the control could not light the burner after three ignition attempts of about 45 seconds each, two minutes apart. To reset it, press the main power ON/OFF button to OFF and then back to ON.

Why does the refrigerator fail to light on gas after refilling the LP tanks?
Air may be trapped in the supply lines. You may need to reset the main power button three or four times to purge it. If that doesn't work, make sure the tanks aren't empty and all manual shutoff valves are open, then contact a service center.

How long does the RM2451 take to cool when first started?
The first time it runs, the cooling unit can take up to four hours to become fully operational.

Does the refrigerator need to be level?
Yes, whenever the vehicle is parked for several hours. It only needs to be level enough to be comfortable to live in. If it isn't, ammonia collects in the evaporator and cooling is lost. Leveling doesn't matter while driving.

What is limp mode?
If the temperature sensor fails, the control runs the cooling unit continuously on the available energy source. It keeps doing this until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset.

What gas pressure does the RM2451 require?
The correct operating pressure is 11 inches of water column. Measure it at the pressure test port just ahead of the burner jet.

Which fuses does the refrigerator use?
It has two fuses: 3 A for the control system and 5 A for the AC heater. Both are under the power module cover.

What size door panel fits the RM2451?
The panel must be 32-1/2 to 32-9/16 in (825–827 mm) high and 20-5/8 to 20-3/4 in (524–527 mm) wide, with a maximum thickness of 5/32 in (4 mm).

Can the door swing be reversed?
Yes. The door is convertible. Use the door reversing kit that matches your handle color (light brown or black) and the swing direction you want.

How should I defrost the freezer?
Turn the unit off, empty it, leave the drip tray in place and open the doors. Hot water in the ice trays speeds up defrosting. Never use a hot air blower, a knife or an ice pick.

How often should the refrigerator be serviced?
Once or twice a year. A qualified technician should inspect the vents, coils, gas connections, gas pressure, flue, burner and electrode gap (1/8 to 3/16 in).

Which vent kit is certified for the RM2451?
Kit No. 3A. It includes Roof Base 3103633.XXX, Roof Cover 3103634.XXX and Lower Side Vent 3109350.XXX, where XXX is the color code.
