Dometic DM2872 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic DM2872 is an absorption refrigerator built for recreational vehicles. Its automatic energy selector system picks the best power source available. With AUTO mode on, the control runs on 120 VAC whenever shore power or a generator is present and switches to LP gas when AC is lost. When AC comes back, it switches back automatically. Turning AUTO off locks the unit onto LP gas. In GAS mode on the DM2872, the AUTO lamp stays off, so you can see the active mode at a glance.
The refrigerator has a limp mode. If the control cannot read the temperature sensor, it runs the cooling unit continuously so food stays cold. It keeps running this way indefinitely, or until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset. If the burner fails to ignite, the CHECK lamp blinks and the buzzer beeps. Both keep going until the refrigerator is restarted, even if AC power becomes available in the meantime.
Storage tips in the manual help you get the best performance. The coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The warmest spots are the upper door shelves. Cover food, let hot items cool to room temperature first, and don't overfill the cabinet so air can circulate. The frozen food compartment is not designed for deep- or quick-freezing. Put ice cream and quick-frozen fruit at the bottom of the aluminum liner, and place ice cube trays in direct contact with the freezer surface.
Keep the refrigerator level when the RV is parked for several hours or more. Running noticeably out of level for hours can cause a loss of cooling. Being level while traveling is not critical. Performance may drop temporarily in sub-zero temperatures, which is normal for absorption units. Wire shelves are held in place by shelf locks that you release with a flat-bladed screwdriver. Plastic caps let you move the shelves to different heights.
On units with an ice maker, you turn it on and off with a bale arm. Raise the arm to OFF about 1-1/2 hours before traveling so the water in the mold freezes and doesn't splash. You can change cube size with an adjusting screw under the protective cover. Turn it counterclockwise for larger cubes and clockwise for smaller ones, no more than one revolution at a time. After winterization or several weeks without use, throw away the first batch of ice.
For maintenance, defrost by switching the unit off, emptying it and leaving the doors open with the drip tray in place. Hot-water ice trays can speed this up. Never use a hot-air blower. Clean the interior with a mild baking soda solution, and use only warm water on the fins, gasket and shelves. A door airing position card keeps the doors latched but ajar during storage. The control draws a few milliamps even when switched off, so keep the batteries on a charger or turn off the main 12 VDC switch.
The warranty requires yearly preventive maintenance at an authorized Dometic service center, starting on the first anniversary of purchase. Major components such as the cooling unit, burner, gas valve and electronic module are covered for two years. All other component failures must be reported within the first 90 days. When you dispose of the refrigerator, remove the doors, and have a technician who is EPA certified in refrigerant recovery handle the refrigerant.
