Dometic Brisk Air 2 Air Conditioner Details

The Dometic Brisk Air is a roof top air conditioner made for recreational vehicles. In most cases it fits over an existing roof vent opening. You set everything with one rotary selector switch and a thermostat. There are three cooling modes. HIGH COOL gives the most cooling and dehumidification. MED. COOL covers normal, everyday cooling. LOW COOL holds a room that is already comfortable, and it is the usual choice at night. In every cooling mode the blower runs all the time to keep the temperature even, and the thermostat turns the compressor on and off.

In the three fan-only positions, the unit moves air through the RV with no cooling or heating. If the optional heat kit is installed, the OPT. HEAT position turns on the electric heater. The thermostat does not control the heater's on/off cycle, so you have to move the selector back to off or to a fan position when the RV is warm enough. Dometic says the heater only takes the chill off cool mornings. It does not replace a furnace in cold weather.

Frost can form on the evaporator coil, most often when it is fairly cool outside. If you see frost, check the filter and clean it if it is dirty. Make sure the louvers are not blocked, and turn the thermostat counter-clockwise to a warmer setting. If the frost stays, run a fan-only setting until the coil is clear. Condensation on ceilings, windows and metal parts is normal in humid air. Keeping doors and windows closed reduces it. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage caused by condensed moisture.

How well the unit holds a set temperature depends on how much heat the RV picks up. You can reduce heat gain by parking in the shade, closing blinds and curtains, keeping doors and windows shut, and not using appliances that give off heat. On very hot days, start the air conditioner early in the morning. This "head start" makes it much easier to keep the inside cool.

Maintenance is simple. Take out the return air filter above the removable panel in the air box, wash it with soap and warm water, let it dry and put it back. Never run the unit without the filter, because dirt can clog the evaporator coil. Clean the air box housing and control panel with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Do not use furniture polish or scouring powder. The fan motor is lubricated at the factory and needs no service under normal use.

If the unit does not run, check these things first. If you are on a generator, make sure it is running and producing power. If you are on a land line, make sure it is sized for the load and plugged in. Check whether the fuse or breaker has opened. If you need to call for service, have the model number and serial number ready. Both are on the rating plate on the base pan, which you can see after removing the return air grille.

The installation section explains where to place the unit when there is no roof vent. For one unit, place it slightly forward of center and centered side to side. For two units, place them one-third and two-thirds of the way back from the front. When you cut a new opening, watch for wiring between the roof and ceiling. Frame the opening so air is not pulled from the roof cavity, and finish it to NFPA 501C. Never create a low spot on the roof where water can collect.

Lift the unit straight onto the opening and do not slide it, because sliding can damage the neoprene gasket. The condenser coil faces the rear of the RV. Inside, connect the white, black and ground wires in the junction box. Six-inch leads are enough. Then fit the ducts and ceiling template and plug the unit cord into the control box. Mount the air box with three #10 screws, and add four wood screws if you want a tighter fit. On tent campers, use a visible SJOW-A cord set between a flanged roof inlet and a dedicated sidewall receptacle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic Brisk Air 2 Air Conditioner, and we answer them below.

What cooling capacities are available in the Brisk Air 579 Series?
The manual lists three capacities: 7,100 BTU/HR for model 57908, 11,000 BTU/HR for model 57912, and 13,500 BTU/HR for the 57915 variants.

What size generator do I need to run the Brisk Air?
For one unit, Dometic recommends at least 2.5 kW for models 57908 and 57912, and 3.5 kW for model 57915. For two units, the minimums are 4.0 kW and 5.0 kW. Keep in mind that generators lose power at high altitude and when they are poorly maintained.

How long should I wait before restarting the air conditioner?
Wait at least two minutes after shutting the unit off with the selector switch or the thermostat. This lets the refrigerant pressure equalize so the compressor can restart easily.

Does the thermostat control the optional heater?
No. The thermostat only cycles the compressor in cooling mode. When the RV is warm enough, you have to turn the heater off yourself by moving the selector switch to OFF or to a fan position.

What should I do if frost forms on the cooling coil?
Check the filter and clean it if it is dirty. Make sure the air louvers are not blocked, and turn the thermostat counter-clockwise to a warmer setting. If the frost stays, run the unit on LOW, MED. or HIGH FAN until the coil is clear.

How do I clean the air filter?
Remove the return air filter above the removable panel in the air box. Wash it with soap and warm water, let it dry, and put it back. Never run the unit without the filter.

What electrical circuit does the unit require?
The unit needs a separate 20 A Time Delay Fuse or HACR circuit breaker and 12 AWG copper supply wire with ground, for runs up to 24 ft. For longer runs, consult the National Electrical Code.

How tight should the mounting bolts be?
Tighten the four mounting bolts evenly to 40 to 50 inch-pounds. This compresses the roof gasket to about 1/2 inch. The bolts are self-locking, so you do not need to overtighten them.

What if my ceiling-to-roof thickness is greater than 4 inches?
For thicknesses from 4 to 6 inches, use the optional duct adaptor, Part No. 313606.000, and Bolt Kit, Part No. 3100895.006.

Can the unit be installed on a sloped roof?
Yes. A flat, level roof section is preferred, but a slant of up to 15° to either side or front to back is acceptable when measured with the RV parked on level ground.

Where do I find the model and serial number?
They are on the unit rating plate, on the base pan near the return air opening. You have to remove the return air grille from the air box to see it.
