Dometic DM2882 Refrigerator Details

The Dometic DM2882 is an 8 cu. ft absorption refrigerator for recreational vehicles. Its automatic energy selector picks the best available power source. In AUTO mode, 120 VAC has priority. If AC power is lost, the refrigerator switches to LP gas and returns to AC as soon as it is available again. Owners who want gas-only operation can turn off AUTO mode with the AUTO/GAS selector button. Absorption units take a while to cool down, so Dometic recommends using the coldest thermostat setting at first start-up.

A limp mode keeps the unit running when a major component fails. If the display module stops working, the control reverts to full automatic operation and holds the temperature at the middle setting. Meanwhile, the power module keeps trying to restore the display. If the temperature sensor fails, the cooling unit runs continuously on the selected energy source. It stays in this mode until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset.

In GAS mode, the control tries to light the burner for about 45 seconds. If ignition fails, the CHECK lamp blinks and a buzzer sounds. The alert continues until the refrigerator is restarted, even if AC power becomes available, although the unit will cool on 120 VAC during that time. After the LP tanks are refilled or the unit has sat unused, air in the gas lines can prevent ignition. Turning the unit off and on up to four times usually purges it.

For food storage, the coldest areas are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The upper door shelves are the warmest. Leave room for air to circulate and cool hot food before putting it inside. The freezer is not meant for deep-freezing or quick-freezing. Put ice cream and quick-frozen fruit at the bottom of the aluminum liner. To make ice faster, set the thermostat to its highest setting temporarily.

The optional ice maker is turned on and off with a bale arm. Raise the arm about 1-1/2 hours before traveling so that the water in the mold freezes and doesn't splash. You can change the cube size with an adjusting screw under the protective cover. Turn it counterclockwise for larger cubes and clockwise for smaller ones, and never more than one revolution at a time. Throw away the first batch of ice after winterization.

The refrigerator must be level when the RV is parked for several hours, but not while traveling. Above 5,500 feet, use electric power because gas burner performance drops. Cooling may also be weaker in sub-zero conditions, which is normal for absorption refrigerators. Even when switched off, the controls draw a few milliamps. During storage, put the batteries on a charger or turn off the RV's main 12 VDC switch.

Routine owner maintenance includes defrosting with the drip tray in place and cleaning the interior liner with a mild baking soda solution. Clean the fins, gasket and shelves with warm water only. Keep the vents free of nests and brush dust off the rear coils. Before storage, use the door airing position card to keep the doors latched but slightly open. Checking the gas connections and cleaning the burner are jobs for a qualified technician.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic DM2882 Refrigerator, and we answer them below.

What is the storage capacity of the Dometic DM2882?
The DM2882 has a total refrigerated volume of 8 cu. ft.

Which energy sources does the DM2882 use?
It runs on 120 VAC or LP gas. A continuous 12 VDC supply is also needed to power the electronic controls.

What should I do if the CHECK lamp is blinking and beeping?
Turn the refrigerator OFF for five seconds and then back ON. If the burner still won't light, make sure the LP tanks aren't empty and that all manual gas valves are open. If the problem continues, contact a service center.

Can I use the refrigerator on gas at high altitudes?
Above 5,500 feet, cooling performance can drop and the burner may go out. At those elevations, Dometic recommends running the refrigerator on electric power.

What fuses does the DM2882 use?
The control system uses a 3 A resettable fuse, which must not be replaced with a standard fuse. The AC heater uses a 5 A fuse. Units with the optional vent fan also have a 3 A inline fuse.

How do I adjust the temperature?
Press the temperature selector button until the lamp for the setting you want lights up. The thermostat controls both gas and electric operation.

What water supply does the optional ice maker need?
It needs a minimum water pressure of 15 psig, a 1/4 in water line to the valve at the rear of the refrigerator, and an easy-to-reach manual shutoff valve. It also has to be connected to 120 VAC.

Does the refrigerator need to be level?
Yes, it must be level when the RV is parked for several hours or more. Otherwise, it can lose cooling. Being level is not critical while traveling.

What should I do if the refrigerator smells of ammonia?
Turn it off at the control panel right away and do not open the doors. Open the RV's windows and doors and leave the vehicle. Then shut off the manual LP gas valve, disconnect the 120 VAC power and contact a Dometic service center.

How long is the warranty?
Dometic provides a limited two-year warranty that covers labor, specified parts and freight. To keep it valid, you must have annual preventive maintenance done at a Dometic Authorized Service Center.

How should I prepare the refrigerator for storage?
Defrost and clean the refrigerator. Have a qualified technician winterize the ice maker if your unit has one. Use the door airing position card to keep the doors latched but slightly open.
