Innova 5310 OBD2 Scanner Details

The Innova 5310 is designed to make Check Engine Light diagnostics quicker to read and act on. Each retrieved trouble code is shown with its definition, a sequence number and a severity rating from 1 to 3. Level 1 faults can be serviced when convenient. Level 2 faults may damage components and should be repaired soon. Level 3 faults will cause damage and need immediate attention. The priority code, marked "1", is the one that turned on the Malfunction Indicator Light and the one for which Freeze Frame data is stored.

Freeze Frame data captures engine conditions at the moment a fault occurred. This includes engine speed, coolant temperature, calculated load, fuel pressure, vehicle speed, air flow rate and intake manifold pressure. On the display, I/M Monitor icons show emissions readiness in either Since DTCs Cleared or This Drive Cycle view. A solid green icon means the monitor is complete. A flashing red icon means it has not finished testing. Gray combinations show monitors that are incomplete or disabled during the current drive cycle.

Live Data mode streams real-time PID values such as voltage, rpm, temperature and fuel system status. The Custom Live Data feature lets you select only the parameters you need, and it remembers your previous selection. Holding ENTER shows an expanded definition of any PID. On Ford and Mazda vehicles, the tool can also read Continuous Memory DTCs and run KOEO and KOER self-tests. During the KOER test, on-screen prompts ask you to turn the steering wheel, press the brake pedal and cycle the overdrive switch.

The System Tests menu gives access to deeper emissions data. Mode $05 retrieves oxygen sensor test results. Mode $06 shows non-continuous monitor tests with Test ID, Module ID, Component ID, minimum and maximum limits, and a Low, High or OK status. Mode $08 can request an EVAP leak test on gasoline vehicles, or a particulate filter regeneration and inducement system reinitialization on diesel vehicles. The Vehicle Information menu retrieves the VIN, calibration IDs, CVNs, available modules and In-use Performance Tracking statistics.

Maintenance tools include an Oil Maintenance Reset. If the automatic reset is not supported, the tool shows the manual reset procedure instead. The Service Check function displays the engine oil level and remaining oil life. A built-in DLC Locator identifies the connector position by model year, manufacturer and model, with a picture and a note on whether the port is covered. Drive Cycle Procedures explain how to complete incomplete monitors before a smog inspection.

The Tool Library includes icon definitions, a searchable OBD2 DTC library covering Powertrain, Network, Body and Chassis codes, LED meanings and monitor status tips. In the settings, you can adjust display brightness, turn the key tone and on-screen footers on or off, view the hotkey legend, choose your U.S. state for smog-check logic and enable the RS2 QR screen. When paired, the RepairSolutions2 app adds verified fixes, predicted repairs, TSBs and recalls, vehicle health reports and upcoming maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Innova 5310 OBD2 Scanner, and we answer them below.

Does the Innova 5310 need batteries?
No. The scanner is powered through the vehicle's 16-pin Data Link Connector and turns on automatically when connected. If it does not power on, check the vehicle's fuse panel for a burned-out fuse.

Should the ignition be on when I connect the scanner?
No. Turn the ignition OFF before you connect or disconnect the tool. After connecting it, turn the ignition on but do not start the engine.

What should I do if a Communication Error appears?
Make sure the vehicle is OBD2 compliant and the cable is firmly seated in the DLC. Turn the ignition off, wait at least 5 seconds (the FAQ section suggests 10), then turn it back on and press LINK. If linking fails after three attempts, contact Technical Support.

Can the scanner read ABS and SRS codes?
Yes. Press SYSTEM MENU and select ABS or SRS to read those codes on supported makes, including BMW, Chrysler/Jeep, Ford/Mazda, GM/Isuzu, Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus and others.

Will erasing codes clear Permanent DTCs?
No. The ERASE function clears stored codes, Freeze Frame data and enhanced data, but Permanent DTCs stay in memory. They are ignored only after the vehicle completes at least 15 warm-up cycles and 200 miles of driving.

What happens to the monitors after I erase codes?
All I/M Readiness monitors reset to a not-run status. You will need to complete an OBD2 Drive Cycle before they show as Complete again.

What do the green, yellow and red LEDs mean?
Green means all systems are OK and all monitors are complete. Yellow means a Pending code is present or some monitors have not run. Red means there is a problem, and the Check Engine Light is on.

How does the battery test work?
With the ignition on and the engine off, the tool first checks battery voltage while you switch the headlights on and then off. If the voltage is below 11.8 V, you must charge the battery before continuing. Then you start the engine to finish the check.

How do I test the alternator?
Warm up the engine and turn on the headlights. Hold the engine speed at about 2000 RPM until the countdown ends. The results screen then shows the charging system voltage.

Can I use the scanner outside the U.S. and Canada?
Full diagnostics are available only for vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada. On vehicles made for other markets, the scanner supports only the Check Engine Light function.

How do I update the firmware?
Install the INNOVA OBD Tool Updater on a Windows or Mac computer and connect the scanner with a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable. Then click "Update my tool now". The update can take up to 25 minutes.

Why does the updater show Disconnected?
This usually means you are using a charge-only USB cable. Check the cable connections, try another USB port or cable, and make sure you have the correct updater version installed.

Which languages does the display support?
The display can be set to English, Spanish or French in Tool Settings.

What warranty comes with the scanner?
The original purchaser gets a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Service or repair typically takes 3 to 4 weeks.
