Ideal Logic Combi C30 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic Combi C30 provides central heating and instantaneous domestic hot water from one compact wall-mounted unit. It comes fully assembled with a plate heat exchanger, diverter valve, circulating pump, pressure gauge, PRV and expansion vessel. It uses full-sequence automatic spark ignition and a single electrode that handles both ignition and flame detection. The casing is white-painted mild steel with a white polymer front panel. When there is a hot water demand, the whole boiler output goes to hot water, and heating resumes afterwards.

The front panel has two temperature knobs, a Mode button, a Restart button, a pressure gauge and a high-resolution display with icons. The Mode button cycles between winter operation (heating and hot water), summer operation (hot water only) and off. A cross over the radiator or tap icon shows that the service is disabled. Display codes show preheat (PH), frost protection (FP), lockouts (L codes) and faults (F codes), which makes basic diagnosis straightforward.

Preheat is switched off at the factory. An installer can switch on the timed intelligent preheat function. It learns hot water use over 24 hours and warms the plate heat exchanger shortly before the same times on the following day. For example, a 6 am shower on Monday triggers preheating for 6 am on Tuesday. This gives faster hot water at the tap while keeping gas use as low as possible.

Intelligent Load Optimisation reduces on-off cycling. If the flow temperature reaches the heating target plus 4°C, the burner switches off. When it relights, it drops to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. The built-in frost protection runs in all modes: it starts when the boiler water falls below 5°C and continues until it reaches 19°C. The pump and diverter valve also run briefly every 24 hours to prevent seizure.

For controls, the boiler supports 230 V programmable room thermostats and timers, OpenTherm devices such as the Ideal Halo range, weather compensation with an outside sensor, and an optional frost thermostat. With weather compensation fitted, the central heating knob sets the room temperature instead of the flow temperature. Installer Mode, opened by holding Mode and Restart for more than 5 seconds, gives access to fault history, maximum and minimum rate tests, a 5-minute venting cycle, diverter mid-position and pump speed settings.

Several flue options are available: telescopic and non-telescopic horizontal flues, vertical terminals, a loft air inlet kit, high level outlet kits, balcony and soffit kits, and flue deflectors. High-rise versions with aluminium inner ducts meet the 2018 regulations on combustible materials in buildings over 18 m. Flue extensions must slope back to the boiler at 1.5°, which is 26 mm of rise per metre.

The siphonic condensate trap reduces the risk of the condensate freezing. A blocked condensate pipe causes gurgling and then an L02 lockout. For water treatment, Ideal recommends inhibitors suitable for aluminium heat exchangers. In hard water areas above 200 ppm, a scale reducer should be fitted on the cold supply. The boiler should be serviced at least once a year by a Gas Safe engineer, and the Benchmark checklist must be completed to keep the warranty valid.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic Combi C30 Boiler, and we answer them below.

How much hot water can the Ideal Logic Combi C30 deliver?
The C30 delivers a nominal 12.4 l/min (2.8 gpm) at a 35°C temperature rise, with a maximum DHW output of 30.3 kW. It fires for hot water at draw-off rates as low as 2 l/min.

What water pressure should the system show on the gauge?
A cold system should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. The boiler will not operate below 0.3 bar, and the system pressure should not exceed 2.5 bar when hot.

How do I top up the system pressure?
Connect the filling loop to the DHW inlet, turn the blue DHW inlet handle horizontal, then slowly open the green filling loop handle until the gauge reads 1 to 1.5 bar. Close both handles, disconnect the loop, and refit the cap and plug.

What does fault code L02 mean?
L02 is an ignition lockout. Check the condensate pipe for blockages, especially freezing, and confirm the gas supply is on and a prepayment meter has credit. Then press Restart. If the boiler still does not light, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.

What does F01 mean?
F01 indicates low water pressure. Re-pressurise the system to between 1 and 1.5 bar using the filling loop. If the pressure keeps dropping, there may be a leak and an engineer should be called.

How do I thaw a frozen condensate pipe?
Find the frozen section, usually at an exposed external point or bend. Apply a hot water bottle, microwaveable heat pack or warm damp cloth, or pour warm (never boiling) water over it. Once the condensate flows freely, restart the boiler.

What is the timed preheat function?
When an installer enables it, the boiler learns your hot water use over 24 hours. It then keeps the plate heat exchanger warm at the same times the next day, so hot water reaches the tap sooner with minimal extra gas.

What is the maximum flue length for the C30?
For a horizontal concentric flue the maximum is 8 m, and for a vertical flue it is 7.5 m. Subtract 1 m for each 90° bend and 0.6 m for each 45° bend.

Can the C30 be installed in a cupboard?
Yes. It needs 5 mm from the cupboard door, but 450 mm of front clearance with the door open for servicing. It also needs 165 mm above, 100 mm below (can be reduced to 5 mm with a removable panel) and 2.5 mm at each side. A compartment does not need ventilation.

Is the C30 compatible with smart and weather compensation controls?
Yes. It works with OpenTherm controls including the Ideal Halo range, weather compensation using an outside sensor, and standard 230 V room thermostats and timers.

Can the C30 run on LPG?
The boiler is supplied for Natural Gas (G20), but an LPG conversion kit is available. The conversion must be carried out by a Gas Safe engineer.

What temperature should I set the heating to for best efficiency?
Set the central heating knob to 72°C or less so the boiler condenses and runs more efficiently. Lowering the room thermostat by 1°C can cut gas use by up to 10%.

How often does the boiler need servicing?
At least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. Record each service in the Benchmark Service Record to keep the warranty valid.
