Ideal Logic Heat H12 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic Heat2 H12 is a compact, heat-only condensing boiler. It supplies central heating and, when paired with a separate hot water cylinder, domestic hot water. It uses full sequence automatic spark ignition through a single dual-purpose spark and detection electrode. A 1:1 Honeywell gas valve sets the gas input according to the air flow from the fan. This design lets the boiler deliver its full output at inlet pressures as low as 14 mbar. The appliance is designed, developed and made in the UK. It is also built with a low component count to improve reliability.

The user controls are a temperature knob, a Mode button, a Restart button and a high-resolution status display that uses clear icons and text descriptions. A flame symbol stays on while the burner is lit. Lockouts appear as L codes and faults as F codes. If the boiler fails to light after five attempts, it shows L 02. Pressing Restart five times within 15 minutes triggers L 0C, which clears after the power is switched off and on. In Installer Mode, the display also shows the last three faults.

The boiler has built-in frost protection that works in all modes, provided the boiler has a permanent live supply. It fires when the water temperature drops below 5°C and runs until it reaches 19°C. The boiler also includes Intelligent Load Optimisation to reduce short cycling. If the flow temperature reaches the CH target plus 4°C, the burner switches off. When it relights, it modulates down to minimum over 60 seconds and stays at minimum for 10 minutes.

The boiler works with a wide range of controls. These include the Ideal Halo range, the Link remote monitoring solution, OpenTherm room thermostats and an outside weather compensation sensor. With an outside sensor connected, the knob sets a nominal room temperature between 10°C and 30°C instead of a flow temperature. Without an outside sensor, you can enable 2x Switched Live operation from the menu so that separate inputs handle CH/DHW demand and DHW demand. The boiler is suited to Y-plan and S-plan systems.

The boiler has no integral pump, so the system pump provides circulation. This means the boiler must be installed on a fully pumped open vented or sealed system, never with gravity circulation. On systems at risk of overheat lockouts, Ideal recommends the optional pump overrun kit (221792). It keeps water circulating for 4 minutes after the burner stops. The boiler also runs a fan overrun cycle, which should not be interrupted by isolating the mains supply. The boiler is compatible with the Ideal System Filter.

A siphonic 75 mm condensate trap reduces the risk of the condensate freezing. It must be filled with water before first use and after maintenance. Internal condensate pipework should be at least 19 mm ID. External runs should be at least 30 mm ID, and horizontal runs need a fall of at least 52 mm per metre. If the pipe freezes, the manual advises thawing it with warm water or a heat pack, never boiling water.

The flue can exit through the side, rear or vertically. A rear flue outlet kit (55/80) allows a compact installation on walls 115 to 442 mm thick. Horizontal flue extensions need a 1.5° fall back towards the boiler. The casing is white painted mild steel with a polymer front panel. The boiler can fit into a cupboard with only 5 mm clearance from the door, but you need 450 mm in front of it with the door open for servicing. QR codes in the manual link to how-to videos for servicing.

Ideal recommends an annual service by a Gas Safe Registered engineer, including combustion checks with a CO/CO2 ratio limit of 0.004. The heat exchanger is aluminium, so only approved inhibitors should be used, such as Fernox, Sentinel X100, ADEY MC1, Scalemaster SM-1 PRO or Calmag CM100. The system must not be filled with artificially softened water.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic Heat H12 Boiler, and we answer them below.

Can the Ideal Logic Heat H12 provide hot water?
Yes, but only indirectly. The H12 is a heat only boiler, so it provides domestic hot water only when a separate hot water cylinder is installed. Tap temperature is set by the cylinder thermostat.

What water pressure should the system have?
On a sealed system, the pressure gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. When the system is hot, the pressure should not exceed 2.5 bar. Low pressure shows as fault code F01.

What does the L 02 fault code mean?
L 02 is an ignition lockout that appears after five failed ignition attempts. First check the condensate pipe for blockages. Then make sure your other gas appliances work and that the meter is on or has credit. After that, press Restart. If the fault comes back, contact a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

How do I restart the boiler after a lockout?
If an L code is showing, press the Restart button and the boiler will repeat its ignition sequence. If you restart it five times within 15 minutes, L 0C appears and you will need to switch the electrical supply off and on again.

How does the frost protection work?
As long as the boiler has power, frost protection runs in all modes. It fires the boiler when the water temperature drops below 5°C and runs until it reaches 19°C. While it is running, the display shows FP. It does not protect the rest of the heating system.

What should I do if the condensate pipe freezes?
Find the frozen section, which is usually outside, at a bend or at the open end. Apply a hot water bottle, a heat pack or warm water, but never boiling water. Once the condensate flows freely, restart the boiler. If you are not confident doing this, call a Gas Safe engineer.

Can the H12 be converted to LPG?
No. According to Ideal's specification sheet, LPG conversion is available for the 18, 24 and 30 kW models but not for the 12 kW model, which runs on natural gas (G20) only.

What is the maximum flue length for the H12?
The maximum effective flue length is 9.0 m for a horizontal flue and 7.5 m for a vertical flue. Each 90° elbow counts as 1.0 m and each 45° elbow counts as 0.6 m.

Does the boiler work with a weather compensation sensor?
Yes. With an outside sensor connected, the temperature knob sets a nominal room temperature between 10°C and 30°C, and water to the hot water cylinder is factory set to 80°C. The boiler also works with the Ideal Halo controls and the Link remote monitoring solution.

How much space does the H12 need?
The casing measures 700 x 395 x 278 mm. For servicing, allow 165 mm above, 100 mm below, 2.5 mm at each side and 450 mm in front. In a cupboard, the door can be 5 mm from the boiler as long as 450 mm is available with the door open.

How often should the boiler be serviced?
The boiler should be serviced at least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer, and the Benchmark service record should be completed each time. Missing services may invalidate the warranty.

How quiet is the Ideal Logic Heat H12?
It has an indoor sound power level of 36 dB, the lowest in the Logic Heat2 H range. This makes it well suited to kitchen cupboards and living areas.

Who do I contact for help?
You can call the Ideal Consumer Helpline on 01482 498660. For a suspected gas leak, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.
