Ideal Logic Heat H18 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic Heat2 H18 is a heat only boiler. It supplies central heating and, when a separate cylinder is installed, domestic hot water. It uses full-sequence automatic spark ignition with a single combined spark and detection electrode. A 1:1 gas valve controls the air-gas ratio, and the valve is set at the factory. There is no internal pump, so the boiler depends on a system pump. It can be fitted to fully pumped open vented or sealed systems, but not to systems with gravity circulation.

The front panel has a temperature knob, a Mode button, a Restart button, a burner indicator and a high-resolution status display. If the boiler fails to light after five attempts, it locks out and shows L 02. Pressing Restart repeats the ignition sequence. If Restart is pressed five times within 15 minutes, the display shows L 0C, and the power must be switched off and on again. Fault codes starting with F and lockout codes starting with L help the user and the engineer find the cause.

Frost protection works in every mode as long as the boiler has a permanent live supply. When the water in the boiler drops below 5°C, the boiler fires and runs until the water reaches 19°C. As a self-check, the boiler pump runs briefly once every 24 hours whether or not there is heat demand. The manual says that lowering the room thermostat by 1°C can cut gas consumption by up to 10%.

Intelligent Load Optimisation reduces on-off cycling. If the flow temperature reaches the CH target plus 4°C, the boiler shuts down. When it relights, it moves to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. Normal operation resumes after those 10 minutes, or after CH demand has been off for more than one hour. This helps when the heat load is lower than the boiler's minimum output.

The boiler works with OpenTherm controls, an outside weather compensation sensor, the Halo range and the Link remote monitoring solution. Installer mode offers 2x Switched Live operation. In this mode, sL1 carries the CH/DHW demand and sL2 carries the DHW demand. An optional pump overrun kit (221792) keeps water circulating for 4 minutes after shutdown. This prevents overheat lockouts on pipe layouts where natural circulation cannot get rid of leftover heat.

A siphonic condensate trap lowers the risk of freezing. If the external pipe freezes, the boiler gurgles and then locks out. You can thaw the pipe with warm water or a heat pack, but never with boiling water. Internal condensate pipe must be at least 19 mm ID. External pipe must be at least 30 mm ID, with a fall of at least 52 mm per metre. Horizontal flues need a 1.5° fall back to the boiler.

To access installer mode, hold Mode and Restart together for more than 5 seconds. This shows the last three faults and gives access to the maximum-rate (SH) and minimum-rate (SL) functions used for combustion checks. At commissioning, CO must be below 350 ppm and the CO/CO2 ratio below 0.0040. The approved inhibitors include Fernox, Sentinel X100, Adey MC1, Scalemaster SM-1 PRO and Calmag CM100. Do not fill the system with artificially softened water.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic Heat H18 Boiler, and we answer them below.

Can the Ideal Logic Heat H18 provide hot water?
Yes, but only when a separate hot water cylinder is installed. The H18 is a heat only boiler. It heats the cylinder and the radiators, and the cylinder thermostat sets the temperature of the hot water at the tap.

What does fault code L 02 mean?
L 02 is an ignition lockout. It appears when the boiler fails to light after five attempts. Check that the condensate pipe is not blocked and that gas is reaching the property. Then press Restart. If the fault comes back, contact a Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

What should the system water pressure be?
On the system gauge, the pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. Low pressure causes an F01 fault. When the system is hot, the pressure should not go above 2.5 bar.

How do I thaw a frozen condensate pipe?
Find the frozen section, which is usually at the most exposed point outside. Apply a hot water bottle, a microwaveable heat pack or warm water to it. Do not use boiling water. When the condensate flows freely again, restart the boiler.

Does the boiler have built-in frost protection?
Yes. If the water in the boiler falls below 5°C, the boiler fires and keeps running until it reaches 19°C. This only works when the boiler has a permanent live power supply.

Can the H18 be converted to LPG?
Yes. According to the specification sheet, an LPG conversion kit is available for the 18 kW model. Follow the separate guidance supplied with the conversion kit.

What is the maximum flue length?
The maximum effective flue length is 9.0 m for a horizontal flue and 7.5 m for a vertical flue. A 90° elbow counts as 1.0 m of flue and a 45° elbow counts as 0.6 m.

Can it be installed in a cupboard or bathroom?
Yes. A cupboard needs no ventilation, but you must leave 450 mm of clearance at the front for servicing. In a bathroom, the boiler must be fitted outside Zone 2 because it is rated IP20.

How often does the boiler need servicing?
A Gas Safe Registered Engineer must service it at least once a year. Each service must be recorded in the Benchmark Service Record, or the warranty stays invalid.

What does L 0C on the display mean?
The boiler has been restarted five times within 15 minutes. Switch the electrical supply off and back on. If the boiler still does not work, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.

Does the boiler have an internal pump?
No. The Logic Heat2 H18 needs a separate system pump. If the pipe layout puts the boiler at risk of overheat lockouts, fit pump overrun kit 221792.

Who should I contact for help?
Call the Ideal Consumer Helpline on 01482 498660. For a gas emergency, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
