Ideal Logic System S30 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic System S30 is the top-output model in the Logic System2 range. It is a condensing system boiler with full sequence automatic spark ignition and fan-assisted combustion. The boiler comes fully assembled with a circulating pump, pressure gauge, PRV and CH expansion vessel, so it suits homes that heat water in a separate cylinder. The casing is white-painted mild steel with a white polymer front panel. The boiler must only be connected to fully pumped, sealed heating systems.

The user control is simple: a Temperature Knob, a Mode Button, a Restart Button, a pressure gauge and a high-resolution status display. The display shows a flame symbol while the burner is lit. "F" codes identify faults and "L" codes identify lockouts. In most lockout cases you can press Restart. If the boiler fails to light after five attempts, it shows L 02. If it is reset five times within 15 minutes, it locks out with L 0C.

Intelligent Load Optimisation reduces on/off cycling. If the flow temperature reaches the CH target plus 4°C, the burner switches off. When it relights, it modulates down to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. This helps when the heat load is below the boiler's minimum output. Built-in frost protection fires the boiler if the water drops below 5°C and runs until it reaches 19°C. A daily pump exercise also runs a brief self-check every 24 hours.

The S30 can use an outside sensor for weather compensation. With a sensor fitted, the knob sets a nominal room temperature between 10°C and 30°C instead of a flow temperature, and hot water to the cylinder is fixed at 80°C. Without a sensor, the boiler can be switched to 2x Switched Live mode, which uses separate CH and DHW demand inputs. OpenTherm controls, Halo controls and Ideal's Link remote monitoring are supported. Lowering the room thermostat by 1°C can cut gas use by up to 10%.

A siphonic 75 mm condensate trap reduces the risk of freezing. If the external pipe freezes, the boiler gurgles and then locks out. You can thaw the pipe with warm, not boiling, water or a heat pack. The installer mode is opened by holding Mode and Restart for more than five seconds. It shows the last three faults and offers maximum and minimum rate tests, a five-minute venting function, and pump speed settings of 70% or 100%.

Servicing is straightforward. The single ignition/detection electrode has a 3.5 mm spark gap, and the burner can be removed without draining the boiler. Ideal approves specific inhibitors, including Fernox, Sentinel X100, Adey MC1, Scalemaster SM-1 PRO and Calmag CM100. The system must not be filled with artificially softened water. The boiler contains no asbestos, mercury or CFCs. It must be serviced every year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer, and the Benchmark checklist must be completed to keep the warranty valid.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic System S30 Boiler, and we answer them below.

What system pressure should the Ideal Logic System S30 show?
When cold, the system should normally read between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it falls, re-pressurise to 1 bar using the filling loop and press Restart. The boiler will not run below 0.3 bar and will show F 01.

What does the L 02 code mean?
L 02 is an ignition lockout after five failed lighting attempts. Check that the condensate pipe is not blocked, that other gas appliances work and that the meter has credit, then press Restart. If it keeps happening, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

How do I thaw a frozen condensate pipe?
Find the frozen section, usually at the most exposed external point. Apply a hot water bottle, a microwaveable heat pack or warm water, but never boiling water. Once condensate flows freely, restart the boiler. Do not try to thaw pipework above ground level.

Can the S30 run on LPG?
Yes. An LPG conversion kit is available for the 30 kW model. The conversion must be carried out by a qualified engineer following the kit instructions.

What is the maximum flue length for the S30?
For the 30 kW model, the maximum effective flue length is 8.0 m horizontal and 7.5 m vertical. Each 90° elbow counts as 1.0 m and each 45° elbow as 0.6 m.

Does the boiler protect itself against frost?
Yes. As long as the power supply stays on, frost protection runs in all modes. It fires the boiler when the water drops below 5°C. It does not protect the rest of the system, so a frost thermostat is recommended for vulnerable pipework.

Can I install the S30 in a kitchen cupboard?
Yes. It needs 5 mm clearance from the cupboard door, but 450 mm of front clearance with the door open for servicing. It also needs 165 mm above and 100 mm below (the bottom gap can be reduced using an easily removable panel). The compartment must not be used for storage.

Can it be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, but because the boiler is rated IP20, it must be installed outside Zone 2 as defined in BS 7671. Never clean it with jets of water.

Why does the pump run when there is no heating demand?
The boiler runs a daily pump exercise, a short self-check every 24 hours that keeps the pump from seizing. After the burner shuts off, the pump also keeps running for about 4 minutes.

How often should the boiler be serviced?
At least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. The Benchmark Service Record must be completed after each service to keep the warranty valid.

What does F 07 mean?
F 07 means low mains voltage. This is not a boiler fault, so contact a qualified electrician or your electricity provider.

How do I clean the boiler casing?
Dust it with a dry cloth. For stubborn marks, wipe with a damp cloth and then dry it. Do not use abrasive cleaning materials.
