Dometic B59516 Air Conditioner Details

The Dometic B59516 is a rooftop air conditioner built for recreational vehicles. It can go on during RV manufacture or be added later. One person can install it with brief help from others, but the manual says a qualified service technician must install and service it. Dometic forbids modifying the unit or adding accessories it has not authorized in writing, because unauthorized changes can be extremely dangerous.

The unit is normally placed over an existing roof vent opening. With no vent, a single unit goes slightly forward of center (front to back) and centered side to side. A two-unit setup places one unit one third and the other two thirds of the way back from the front of the RV. When choosing capacity, consider RV size, window area, insulation, geographic location and the comfort level you want.

Before cutting the roof, the installer must shut off the gas supply, disconnect 120 Vac power and disconnect the positive 12 Vdc battery terminal. The opening must sit between roof reinforcing members and must never create a low spot where water could pool. The ceiling opening is framed so air is not drawn from the roof cavity, and an entry hole for the power supply is left at the front.

The unit must be lifted onto the roof and set over the opening. It must never be slid, because sliding can damage the bottom gasket and cause leaks. From inside the RV, the installer cuts the duct divider to match the ceiling thickness, with the foil back facing the rear. A polarized 6-pin cord from the rooftop unit plugs into the matching connector in the electronic control box, so it can only be connected one way.

The power supply is wired white to white and black to black, with the bare copper ground fastened under the grounding screw in the junction box. The connectors are taped so they cannot vibrate loose on the road. The air distribution box is fastened with two sheet metal screws and eight wood screws. The front and rear vent doors are installed afterwards, followed by the filter, the snap-in return air grille and the control knobs.

In cooling mode, High Cool gives maximum cooling and dehumidification, Medium Cool handles normal needs and Low Cool maintains comfort and is suited to nighttime use. The fan keeps running while the compressor cycles off, which keeps temperatures even throughout the RV. A sliding lever opens and closes the center air discharge.

With the optional electric heater installed, the OPT HEAT setting removes the chill on cool mornings. It does not replace a furnace, and the thermostat does not cycle the heater. Maintenance is simple: wash the filter with soap and warm water, and clean the housing with a mild detergent. Never use polish or scouring powders. The blower motor is factory lubricated and needs no service.

The manual also covers frost on the coil, heat gain and condensation. Ways to reduce heat gain include parking in shade, using blinds, keeping doors shut, avoiding heat-producing appliances and starting the unit early in the day. Before calling for service, check the generator output, the land-line sizing and the breaker. The model and serial label is on the unit's base pan, visible once the return grille is removed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic B59516 Air Conditioner, and we answer them below.

What is the cooling capacity of the Dometic B59516?
The B59516.71X has a nominal cooling capacity of 15,000 BTU/hr and runs on 120 Vac, 60 Hz, single-phase power.

What size generator do I need?
Dometic's general guideline is a minimum of 3.5 kW for one unit and 5.0 kW for two units. Factor in your RV's total power use, and keep in mind that generators lose power at high altitude and when poorly maintained.

What circuit protection and wire size are required?
Use a dedicated 20 Amp time delay fuse or circuit breaker and at least 12 AWG copper wire with ground for runs up to 24 ft. For longer runs, consult the National Electrical Code.

How big must the roof opening be?
The roof opening must be 14-1/4″ x 14-1/4″ (±1/8″) and finished to NFPA 1192. An existing opening larger than 14-3/8″ must be resized, and one smaller than 14-1/8″ must be enlarged.

Which refrigerant does it use and how much?
The B59516.71X uses 18.3 oz of R-410A refrigerant.

What torque should the mounting bolts have?
Tighten all four mounting bolts (locations A, D, E and H) evenly to 40–50 inch-pounds. Over-tightening can damage the base pan or the ceiling template, while too little torque can leave a poor roof seal and cause leaks.

Which air distribution box is compatible?
The unit works with ADB model 3314851.000, which has integral mechanical controls.

Why should I wait before restarting the compressor?
Wait at least 2 minutes after switching the compressor off manually. Restarting sooner makes it quick-cycle, which can overload the compressor or the supply circuit.

How often should the air filter be cleaned?
Clean the filter at least every 2 weeks of operation by washing it with soap and warm water and letting it dry. Never run the unit without the filter, because dirt will clog the evaporator coil.

What should I do if frost forms on the cooling coil?
Inspect and clean the filter and make sure the vents are open. You can also turn the thermostat to a warmer setting (counterclockwise). If frost continues, run a fan only setting until the coil is clear. If the problem persists, contact a service center.

Can the heat mode replace my RV furnace?
No. The optional electric heater only removes the chill on cool days or mornings and is not meant to replace a furnace in cold weather.

What is the thermostat's operating range?
The thermostat switches the compressor on and off within a range of about 65 °F to 90 °F, measured at the ADB inlet.

What is the maximum roof tilt allowed?
The B59516 group of models allows a maximum tilt of 15° in all directions, measured with the RV parked on a level surface.
