Dometic B57915 Air Conditioner Details

The Dometic B57915 is a low-profile rooftop air conditioner for RVs. It can go on during manufacture or be retrofitted later. The design fits over an existing roof vent opening, so most installs need no new cut. One person can install it with brief help from a second person. The manual tells you to plan cooling needs around the RV's size, window area, insulation, the climate where it will be used and the comfort level you want.

If there's no roof vent to use, a single unit should sit slightly forward of center (front to back) and centered side to side. For two-unit setups, place one unit one third of the way back from the front and the other two thirds back, both centered side to side. Before cutting, check the roof for obstructions in the airflow area. Inside, check where the air distribution box will go and make sure it clears doors, room dividers, curtains and ceiling fixtures.

A new opening has to sit between the roof reinforcing members. Frame it with lumber at least 3/4″ thick so the frame doesn't collapse when the unit is bolted down and air isn't drawn from the roof cavity. Never create a low spot on the roof, because water will pool there and can cause leaks. To reuse an old vent opening, remove the old caulking and seal the screw holes and seams with an all-weather sealant.

The 120 Vac supply must be a grounded copper cable with non-metallic sheathing on its own dedicated circuit. Run it into the front of the opening and leave at least 15″ of wire inside. The unit connects to the control box through a polarized 6-pin plug that fits only one way. At the junction box, connect white to white and black to black, put the ground wire under the grounding screw, and tape the connectors so vibration can't loosen them.

Never slide the unit across the roof, because that can damage the bottom gasket and cause leaks. Lift it into place and use the gasket as a guide. From inside, cut the foam duct divider to match the ceiling thickness. Install it 5-5/8″ from the back of the opening with the foil side facing the rear. The ADB is held by two sheet metal screws and eight wood screws. The front and rear vent doors go on last.

For cooling, turn the selector to the blue graphic and choose HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW COOL. Use high for the most cooling and dehumidification and low for quiet night operation. The fan keeps running when the compressor cycles off, so temperatures stay even. After switching the compressor off manually, wait at least 2 minutes before restarting it to avoid overloading the compressor or circuit. The optional heat strip only takes the chill off. It doesn't replace a furnace.

Clean the return air filter at least every two weeks of use with soap and warm water. Never run the unit without the filter, because dirt will clog the evaporator coil. Wipe the ADB housing with a mild detergent and don't use polish or scouring powder. The blower motor is factory lubricated and needs no service. If the coil frosts, clean the filter, raise the thermostat setting or run the fan alone until the frost clears.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic B57915 Air Conditioner, and we answer them below.

What is the cooling capacity of the Dometic B57915?
The B57915 has a nominal cooling capacity of 13,500 BTU/hr and runs on 120 Vac, 60 Hz, single-phase power.

What size generator do I need to run the B57915?
Dometic's general guideline is 3.5 kW for one unit and 5.0 kW for two. Also account for the RV's total power use, high altitude and generator maintenance, because each of these reduces available power.

What circuit protection and wire size are required?
Use a dedicated 20 A time delay fuse or circuit breaker and at least 12 AWG copper wire for runs up to 24 ft. For longer runs, size the wire according to the National Electrical Code.

Which refrigerant does the unit use and how much?
The B57915.71X holds 18.0 oz of R-410A refrigerant.

What roof opening size is needed?
You need a square opening of 14-1/4″ x 14-1/4″ (±1/8″). If an existing vent opening is larger than 14-3/8″, resize it. If it's smaller than 14-1/8″, enlarge it.

What is the maximum roof slope allowed for installation?
The B57915 can be installed on roof sections tilted up to 15° in any direction, measured with the RV parked on level ground.

How tight should the mounting bolts be?
Tighten all four bolts (positions A, D, E and H) evenly to 40–50 inch-pounds. Overtightening can damage the base pan or ceiling template. Undertightening can leave a poor roof seal and cause leaks.

Which air distribution box works with this model?
The B57915 uses the ADB 3314851.000 with integral mechanical controls: an 8-position selector switch and a thermostat.

Can the B57915 heat my RV?
Only with the optional electric heater installed. The heat strip is meant to remove the chill on cool mornings and doesn't replace a furnace. The thermostat doesn't cycle the heater on and off.

How often should I clean the air filter?
At least every 2 weeks of operation. Wash it with soap and warm water, let it dry and reinstall it. Never run the unit without the filter.

Why is ice forming on the cooling coil?
Icing usually comes from a dirty filter, blocked vents or low outdoor temperatures. Clean the filter, open the vents, set the thermostat warmer or run the fan alone until the coil is clear. If it keeps happening, contact a service center.

Where can I find the model and serial number?
The unit label is on the base pan and can be seen after you remove the return air grille. The ADB rating plate is on the ceiling template and can be seen through the filter opening.
