Drayton RTS1 Thermostat Details
The Drayton RTS1 is the standard heating model in the RTS room thermostat range made by Drayton, part of Schneider Electric. It uses electronic sensing to control room temperature accurately, and a relay to switch the heating demand. The manual points out that because it is electronic, the relay only works when the unit is connected to a 230V mains supply. If the unit is tested without mains power, you won't hear a click and the call-for-heat contact stays open. This is normal and doesn't mean the unit is faulty.
Where you fit the thermostat affects its performance. Keep it out of direct sunlight and draughts. The best spot is an inside wall where the unit can sense the true room temperature, away from radiators and other appliances that give off heat. Heat from these sources would make the thermostat switch off the heating too early. A good location lets the unit control comfort reliably while avoiding wasted energy.
Installation starts by loosening the securing screws and taking off the wall-plate. For surface wiring, you can snap out the cable entry strip on the bottom edge of the wall-plate with pliers. Fit the wall-plate with its terminals at the top. Wire it to the schematic diagram, then plug the thermostat onto the plate and tighten the screws. Always isolate the mains supply before fitting the thermostat to the wall-plate or removing it.
The RTS1 uses only three terminals: live supply to L, neutral to N, and the call-for-heat output on terminal 3. The manual says the neutral connection to terminal N is essential, because the electronic circuit needs it to run. The unit is double insulated, so an earthing continuity terminal is provided only as a convenient place to join earth conductors. Check that the circuit fuse is rated at 3A before switching the mains back on.
To set the temperature, turn the control knob until the required value lines up with the setting mark. A mechanism under the knob can limit the setting range or lock a fixed set point, which is useful in rented homes, offices or public buildings. To adjust it, set the temperature you want, carefully pull off the knob, then lift and rotate the two limiting arms into the required notches. Refit the knob so the same temperature lines up with the mark.
The RTS1 can replace older ACL and Drayton room thermostats, such as the ACL TS142 and the Drayton Roomstat RT and RTE, as long as the load is no more than 2(1)A. The manual includes conversion tables that map the old terminals to the RTS terminals, and also lists equivalents from other brands, including Danfoss Randall, Honeywell, Potterton, Sunvic and Horstman. This makes retrofitting easier for installers.
At the end of its life, don't throw the RTS1 thermostat away with household waste. Recycle it at an electronic waste facility.
