Drayton LP522 Thermostat Details

The Drayton LP522 is sold as a thermostat, but it is really a 5/2-day dual-channel programmer from the Lifestyle range. It switches central heating and hot water on and off according to time periods you choose. It does not sense room temperature. That job stays with the room and cylinder thermostats, so heating will not run if the room thermostat has switched it off, and hot water will not heat once the cylinder thermostat is satisfied.

From the factory, the LP522 runs a standard program where heating and hot water work together. On weekdays it switches ON at 6.30am, OFF at 8.30am, ON at 4.30pm and OFF at 10.30pm. At weekends it uses 7.00am to 9.00am and 4.00pm to 11.00pm. The middle period, ON2 and OFF2, is set to 12.00pm for both times, so it does nothing until you change it. To return to this program at any point, press SET and + together.

Programming follows a fixed order. Press SET? to see "SET PROG?", then press YES to work through four blocks in turn: CH Monday to Friday, HW Monday to Friday, CH Saturday and Sunday, and HW Saturday and Sunday. You change times with the – and + buttons in 1-minute steps, or in 10-minute steps if you hold the button down. To keep a time as it is, press SET? to skip it. If you press nothing for two minutes, the unit goes back to normal operation.

There are some rules for setting times. Periods must be entered in order (ON1, OFF1, ON2, OFF2, ON3, OFF3), and the display flashes a warning if they are out of order. ON1 cannot be the last timing before midnight. OFF3 can be after midnight as long as it is no more than 23 hours 59 minutes after ON1. The Advance button moves a channel on to its next ON or OFF point and shows ADV. It only works in TIMED or ONCE mode.

Each channel has its own Boost button. Press and hold it to add one hour, shown as BST on the display. Press again for two or three hours, and press once more to cancel. Each channel also has its own SELECT button for the OFF, TIMED, ONCE and ON modes. Changing the mode never deletes your stored times. You can go back to them simply by selecting TIMED again.

The holiday switch-off turns the system off for a set number of days. Each pass through midnight counts as one day, so leaving on Saturday morning and wanting heat again on Tuesday morning means setting 3 days. The clock is set at the factory and changes for British Summer Time on its own, using the DLS setting. The day of the week is worked out from the date, so if the weekday is wrong, you need to correct the date. The backlit LCD and red LEDs show when each channel is on.

The unit must be installed by a qualified electrician or heating engineer. It clips onto an industry-standard wall-plate, and in many cases it can replace an older programmer without changing the existing wiring. The P/G link on the back must match the system type. Always switch off the mains before removing the unit, and never fit it to a live wall-plate. The LP522Si version adds a boiler service reminder: it gives a warning 30 days before the service is due and lowers the comfort level if the service is not done.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Drayton LP522 Thermostat, and we answer them below.

Is the Drayton LP522 a thermostat or a programmer?
It is a 5/2-day dual-channel programmer. It controls when central heating and hot water come on and go off, while separate room and cylinder thermostats control the temperature.

How many heating periods can I set per day?
You can set up to 3 ON/OFF periods per day for each channel, with one set of times for Monday to Friday and another for Saturday and Sunday.

How do I reset the LP522 to the factory program?
Press SET and + together. The programmer goes back to the pre-set standard program.

Why does nothing happen during the midday period?
In the factory program, ON2 and OFF2 are both set to 12.00pm, so the second period is not active. To use it, set different ON2 and OFF2 times.

What is the difference between Advance and Boost?
Advance moves the channel on to its next ON or OFF point and only works in TIMED or ONCE mode. Boost turns the channel on, or extends the ON time, by 1, 2 or 3 hours.

What do the OFF, TIMED, ONCE and ON modes do?
OFF keeps the channel off all the time. TIMED follows up to 3 periods a day. ONCE runs one period from the start of ON1 to the end of OFF3. ON keeps the channel on all the time.

Will I lose my settings during a power cut?
No. The display goes blank, but the time and program settings are always kept.

Do I need to change the clock for British Summer Time?
No. The clock is set at the factory and changes for summer and winter time on its own. You can turn the DLS setting on or off in the date menu.

How do I use the holiday mode?
Press SET? until you see "SET H'DAY?", press YES, choose the number of days with + and –, and then press SET. Each pass through midnight counts as one day.

What fuse does the LP522 need?
The mains input must have a 3A fuse. The switch rating is 2(1)A at 230V a.c. per switch.

What is the P/G link on the back of the unit?
Set it to P for a fully pumped system with separate heating and hot water control. Set it to G for a gravity-fed hot water system, where heating cannot run without hot water.

Can the LP522 replace my existing programmer?
In many cases, yes. It fits an industry-standard wall-plate and has the same terminal layout as many common models. Check the terminal comparison chart and leave 70 mm clearance to the right and 25 mm above.
