Dometic DM2862 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic DM2862 is an absorption refrigerator. It has no compressor, so it runs silently. Ammonia condenses in the finned coil at the top rear of the unit, then flows into the freezer evaporator, where circulating hydrogen makes it evaporate and produces the cooling. Because the system depends on gravity, the unit must be level whenever the vehicle is parked for several hours. On the road, the vehicle's movement keeps the ammonia from pooling. When you start the unit for the first time, the cooling cycle may need up to four hours to become fully operational.
The automatic energy selector picks the best power source available. In AUTO mode, 120 V AC has priority, and the system switches to LP gas when shore power is lost. If the burner does not light, the controls make three ignition attempts of about 45 seconds each, two minutes apart, and then turn on the CHECK lamp. To reset, press ON/OFF off and then on again. If there is air in the gas lines after refilling the tanks, repeat this power cycle three or four times.
The controls also have limp modes. If the display module fails, the refrigerator keeps running automatically with the temperature held at the middle setting. If the temperature sensor fails, the cooling unit runs continuously on the selected energy source until the sensor is replaced. The built-in climate control evaporates condensation that forms on the frame between the compartments in hot, humid weather. It draws 12 V DC continuously, so turn it off when no charging source is available.
Installation must be done by qualified personnel. The unit should sit on a solid, level floor and must never be placed directly on carpet. A wood strip across the upper opening of the enclosure anchors the top frame. A sealing strip on the front frame keeps the combustion system separate from the living space. Any gap of more than 1-1/2 inches above the unit should be blocked to prevent heat buildup. Run the drain hose through the floor so that it does not touch the boiler casing.
For food storage, the coldest areas are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is not meant for quick freezing. Precool meat and fish before putting them in, and keep ice cream at the bottom of the aluminum liner. Cover foods to keep them from drying out or sharing odors, and avoid overpacking the shelves so that air can circulate. Setting the thermostat to its highest position makes ice faster.
For defrosting, turn the unit off, empty it, and place the drip tray under the evaporator. Never use sharp tools or hot air blowers. Clean the interior with a mild soda solution. For storage, the included Airing Position Card holds the doors ajar. A technician should inspect the flue, burner, gas pressure and controls every year, which is also required to keep the warranty valid. The door swing can be reversed with a hinge kit, and optional decorative insert panels can be fitted.
