Dometic RM2652 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic Americana RM2652 is an absorption refrigerator made for recreational vehicles and mobile homes. It has no compressor. Ammonia liquefies in a finned condenser coil at the top of the unit, then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer section. There it meets circulating hydrogen gas, which makes the ammonia evaporate and produces cold. Because there are no moving parts in the cooling circuit, the unit runs quietly, but it relies on gravity and on good airflow across the back of the cabinet.
That design makes leveling important. The evaporator tubing is sloped so liquid ammonia keeps moving downward. If the vehicle stays parked off level for several hours with the refrigerator on, ammonia can pool in the tubing, slow or block circulation, and cooling drops off. The manual says the vehicle only needs to be level enough to live in comfortably. While driving, the rolling motion of the vehicle keeps ammonia from collecting, so leveling doesn't matter on the road.
The control panel has a main power button, an AUTO/GAS mode selector, an AUTO indicator lamp, a CHECK lamp for gas mode, and a climate control switch. In AUTO mode the electronics pick the best available energy source and give 120 Volt AC priority over gas. If AC power fails, the unit switches to LP gas on its own, and it goes back to AC when power returns. In both modes the thermostat is preset at the factory to stay below safe food storage temperature.
If the burner doesn't light, the CHECK lamp comes on. To reset it, turn the main power off and on again, which starts a new ignition attempt. The first start on gas, or the first start after the tanks have been refilled, may need three or four resets to purge air from the lines. The manual warns against resetting repeatedly if the lamp stays lit, and suggests checking the tank levels and shutoff valves first.
Inside, the food compartment is fully closed and unventilated. The coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom, and the upper door shelves are the warmest. Cover strong-smelling foods and vegetables. The freezer is not designed for deep or quick freezing. Precooled meat or fish keeps about three times longer in the freezer than in the fresh food compartment. Put soft fruits and ice cream in the coldest part of the freezer.
To defrost, switch the unit off, empty it, leave the drip tray in place and leave the doors open. You can speed things up by putting a tray of hot water on the freezer shelf. Never use hot air blowers or sharp tools, because they can warp parts or puncture the ammonia system. Clean the interior with a weak lukewarm soda solution, and use plain warm water for the gaskets, shelves and evaporator.
The standard 12 Volt DC climate control evaporates the moisture that forms on the frame between the compartments in hot, humid weather. It draws power continuously while it's on, so turn it off when no charging source is available. The doors can be converted to swing the other way with a conversion kit, but only before the unit is installed. The condensate drain hose has a check valve and can be extended if needed.
Dometic recommends maintenance once or twice a year by a qualified technician. This covers cleaning the vents and coils, leak testing with bubble solution, checking gas pressure, cleaning the flue and burner, and testing the gas safety shutoff, which should cut gas within one minute of a flame loss.
