Lowrance Hook-5 Fishfinder Details

The Lowrance HOOK-5 is operated with a compact set of keys: LIGHT/POWER, PAGES, MENU, ENTER, the zoom keys and a directional keypad. To turn the unit on or off, press and hold LIGHT/POWER for three seconds. A short press changes the backlight level. Pressing both zoom keys at once drops a Man Overboard waypoint and automatically creates an active route back to it. The Setup wizard runs the first time you power on and can be run again by restoring defaults.

Nine fishing modes load preset sonar settings for specific conditions. Shallow Water covers depths of 60 ft or less. General Use covers 1000 ft or less, and Deep Water is for 1000 ft or more. Fresh Water, Slow Trolling, Fast Trolling, Clear Water, Brackish Water and Ice are rated for 400 ft or less. The manual recommends Fresh Water mode below 100 feet so the unit tracks the bottom properly. Reset fishing mode clears your changes. Manual mode limits the unit's digital depth search and is meant for advanced users.

On the conventional sonar page, Auto Sensitivity is on by default and still allows changes of about ±40%. Colorline shows hard returns in light colors so fish stand out from the bottom. Other sonar tools include Noise Rejection, Surface Clarity, Split Zoom, Split Flasher, an Amplitude Scope and Fish ID symbols. Trackback lets you scroll back through sonar history with a blue history bar. Stop sonar prevents interference from a second sonar unit on the boat, but no history is recorded while sonar is stopped.

DownScan offers 800 kHz for the best resolution or 455 kHz for greater depth penetration. You can set contrast and choose a color palette. White works well for suspended targets, purple for structure detail and bottom hardness, and sepia for bottom detail. DownScan can also be overlaid on the conventional sonar page. Combo pages can be stacked vertically or placed side by side, and you can resize their panels. Press PAGES twice to switch the active panel, which is marked with an orange border.

The chart can be shown North Up or Course Over Ground (COG), with an optional COG extension line and grid lines. You can use Lowrance or Navionics chart data. Waypoints can be sorted by name or by distance, and routes can be navigated forward or in reverse. A trail must be converted into a route before you can navigate it. Advanced mode adds arrival radius, off-course distance, magnetic variation, True or Magnetic bearings, WAAS/MSAS/EGNOS control, and Arrival, Off Course and Anchor alarms.

The Installation menu includes keel offset, entered as a negative value such as -1 ft. It also offers paddlewheel water speed calibration, temperature calibration, water distance reset and transducer type selection. Sonar logs and screenshots are saved to a microSD card. To take a screenshot, press Power and then Zoom (+). Screenshots cannot be saved to internal memory or mapping cards. With the optional NMEA cable connected, the unit can display AIS targets. It also has a simulator and a trip calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Lowrance Hook-5 Fishfinder, and we answer them below.

How do I turn the Lowrance HOOK-5 on and off?
Press and hold the LIGHT/POWER key for three seconds. A short press on the same key changes the backlight level.

How deep can the HOOK-5 read?
Up to 2500 ft (762 m) with a 50/200 kHz transducer, 1000 ft (305 m) at 83/200 kHz, and 300 ft (91 m) with 455/800 kHz DownScan.

What power supply does the HOOK-5 need?
It runs on a 12 V system and accepts 10 to 17 V. It typically draws 1.1 A and is protected by a 3-amp automotive fuse.

Is the HOOK-5 waterproof?
Yes. The unit is rated to the IPX7 waterproof standard.

How do I set a Man Overboard waypoint?
Press the ZOOM IN and ZOOM OUT keys at the same time. The unit creates a MOB waypoint and an active route back to it. You must cancel navigation to end the function.

Which chart cards are compatible with the HOOK-5?
It supports microSD and microSDHC cards with Lake Insight and Nautic Insight PRO, Navionics +, C-MAP MAX-N, Fishing Hot Spots PRO and Insight Genesis.

How do I take a screenshot?
Insert a blank microSD card, then press Power followed by Zoom (+). Screenshots cannot be saved to internal memory or mapping cards, and you need a computer or another microSD-compatible device to view them.

Why does my unit not track the bottom in shallow water?
In water shallower than 100 feet, use Fresh Water fishing mode. Also check that the selected depth range is not too shallow for the unit to lock onto the bottom.

How can I connect the HOOK-5 to an AIS device or VHF radio?
Use the optional Power/NMEA cable 000-0127-49 and turn on Advanced mode. Then set the NMEA 0183 baud rate to match your AIS device.

Which features require Advanced mode?
Arrival radius, off-course distance, bearings, WAAS/MSAS/EGNOS, NMEA 0183 output, extra unit options, and the Arrival, Off Course and Anchor alarms.

How many waypoints, routes and trails can I store?
Up to 3000 waypoints and 100 routes with up to 100 waypoints each. You can also store 100 trails with up to 10,000 points per trail.

How do I reduce interference from another sonar on my boat?
Change the ping speed, choose a Custom high or Custom medium CHIRP frequency, or use Stop sonar to stop the HOOK-5 from transmitting.
