Ideal Logic System S18 Boiler Details

The Ideal Logic System S18 is a system boiler with full sequence automatic spark ignition and fan-assisted combustion. It arrives fully assembled with a circulating pump, pressure gauge, PRV and CH expansion vessel, so there are fewer separate parts to fit during installation. Everything is operated from a simple front panel with a temperature knob, a Mode button, a Restart button and a high-resolution status display. The display shows a flame symbol whenever the burner is lit and uses L and F codes to report lockouts and faults.

The built-in boiler frost protection works in every mode as long as the boiler has permanent mains power. If the water in the boiler drops below 5°C, the burner fires and keeps running until the water reaches 19°C. The pump also runs briefly once every 24 hours as a self-check, even when there is no heating demand. Ideal notes that the boiler must be wired to a permanent live supply. Without it, frost protection will not work and the warranty is invalid.

Intelligent Load Optimisation stops the boiler from switching on and off too often when the heating load is small. If the flow temperature reaches the CH target plus 4°C, the burner switches off. When it relights, it drops to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. Normal operation resumes after those 10 minutes, or once the CH demand has been off for more than one hour.

If no outside sensor is fitted, the knob sets the flow temperature between 30°C and 80°C. When an outside sensor is connected, the knob sets a nominal room temperature between 10°C and 30°C instead, and the flow to the cylinder is fixed at 80°C. The boiler can also be set to 2x Switched Live operation, where SL1 handles CH/DHW demand and SL2 handles DHW demand. It works with Halo controls, OpenTherm and weather compensation, and it can be linked to Ideal's Link remote monitoring.

The siphonic condensate trap lowers the risk of the condensate freezing. If the pipe does freeze, the boiler makes a gurgling noise and then locks out with an L02 or L0d code. You can thaw the frozen section with warm, never boiling, water or a heat pack, then restart the boiler. Inside the property, condensate pipework needs a minimum internal diameter of 19 mm. Outside, it needs at least 30 mm, and horizontal runs must fall at least 52 mm per metre.

Installers can enter Installer Mode by holding Mode and Restart together for more than 5 seconds. This mode shows the last three faults and lets the installer run the burner at maximum (SH) or minimum (SL) rate. It also has a 5-minute venting function (UF) and pump speed settings (P1 at 100%, P7 at 70%). During commissioning, the CO reading must be below 350 ppm and the CO/CO2 ratio below 0.0040 at both rates.

The heat exchanger is aluminium, so only approved inhibitors should be used, such as Fernox, Sentinel X100, Adey MC1, MBI, Scalemaster SM-1 PRO or Calmag CM100. Do not fill the system with artificially softened water. For the warranty to apply, the Benchmark commissioning must be completed, the boiler must be registered with Ideal, and it must be serviced every year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal Logic System S18 Boiler, and we answer them below.

What should the system pressure be on the Ideal Logic System S18?
When the system is cold, the gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar. The boiler will not run if the pressure falls below 0.3 bar. When the system is hot, the pressure should not go above 2.5 bar.

How do I re-pressurise the boiler?
Use the filling loop to bring the pressure up to 1 bar, then turn off the tap on the filling loop and press the Restart button. If the pressure keeps dropping, call a Gas Safe Registered engineer because there may be a leak.

What does the L 02 fault code mean?
L 02 is an ignition lockout: the boiler has failed to light after five attempts. Check that the condensate pipe is not blocked and that gas is reaching the property, then press Restart. If the fault comes back, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.

What does F 01 mean on the display?
F 01 means low water pressure. Check that the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar and re-pressurise the system if it does not.

What does L 0C mean?
L 0C means the boiler has been restarted 5 times within 15 minutes. Switch the electrical supply to the boiler off and back on. If the boiler still does not work, contact Ideal or a Gas Safe engineer.

How do I unfreeze a frozen condensate pipe?
Find the frozen section, which is usually outside, at a bend, or at the open end of the pipe. Warm it with a hot water bottle, a heat pack, a warm damp cloth or warm water. Never use boiling water. Once the pipe is clear, restart the boiler.

Can the S18 run on LPG?
Yes. According to the technical specification, an LPG conversion kit is available for the 18 kW model. The conversion must follow the instructions supplied with the kit.

How long can the flue be?
For the 18 kW model, a horizontal flue can have an effective length of up to 9.0 m and a vertical flue up to 7.5 m. Each 90° elbow counts as 1.0 m and each 45° elbow as 0.6 m.

Can the boiler be installed in a cupboard?
Yes. It can sit as close as 5 mm to the cupboard door, but 450 mm of front clearance with the door open is needed for servicing. The compartment does not need ventilation and must not be used for storage.

Can it be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, but only outside Zone 2 as defined in BS 7671. The boiler is rated IP20 and must not be cleaned with jets of water.

How often should the boiler be serviced?
At least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. The service must be recorded in the Benchmark Service Record to keep the warranty valid.

How can I make the boiler more efficient?
Turn the central heating temperature knob lower so the boiler condenses more often. Turning the room thermostat down by 1°C can cut gas use by up to 10%.

Why does the pump run when there is no heating demand?
The pump runs briefly once every 24 hours as a self-check. This is normal and helps prevent it from seizing.

What should I do if I smell gas?
Call the National Gas Emergency Service straight away on 0800 111 999. Put out any naked flames, do not use electrical switches, and open all windows and doors.
