Garmin G3X Panel Avionics Unit Details
The Garmin G3X panel unit is the core display of an integrated glass cockpit for experimental and light sport aircraft. Each GDU can run as a PFD or MFD, and two-display setups can show full or split screens. If PFD1 fails, the MFD goes into reversionary mode. If the MFD fails, the remaining PFDs revert. If the GDU 375 fails, the weather and XM pages are lost. A pin-strapped switch can also force reversionary mode manually.
The primary flight display includes an airspeed tape with a 6-second trend vector, configurable V-speeds and an optional TAS-adjusted VNE band. Other PFD elements are a HSI with two bearing pointers, baro minimums alerting, and altitude alerts at 1000 ft and 200 ft. A G-meter appears automatically when load or attitude limits are exceeded. With a GAP 26 probe and GSU 25 ADAHRS, the display adds angle-of-attack cues and an audible stall warning tone.
The engine indication system supports Lean Assist. It detects the EGT peak and tells you whether the engine is running rich or lean of peak. The fuel calculator tracks the burn from measured fuel flow and asks you to confirm the fuel quantity after refueling. CAS messages are color-coded: red for warnings, amber for cautions and white for advisories. Master Warning and Master Caution discrete outputs can drive external annunciator lamps.
The moving map includes Synthetic Vision with Pathways boxes, fuel range rings and glide range rings. A Best Airport function picks a runway within gliding distance. Weather can come from SiriusXM (GDU 375) or free FIS-B on 978 MHz. Products include NEXRAD, METARs, TFRs and winds aloft. Traffic is shown from TIS-A, ADS-B or a GTS 800 system. Terrain alerting gives spoken cautions and warnings, but it is not a certified TAWS.
The unit connects to Garmin's GFC autopilot through GSA 28 servos and GMC mode controllers. Supported modes include altitude hold, vertical speed, VNAV, glidepath and coupled ILS approaches. The ESP system gently nudges the aircraft back toward a normal attitude and airspeed when the autopilot is off. It also includes a level mode. Integrated control of Vertical Power devices handles trim, flaps and wig-wag lights from the softkeys.
For upkeep, you use the SD card to update software and databases, load .ace checklists, export track logs and import flight plans. Database cycles are 28 days for navigation and FliteCharts, 56 days for SafeTaxi and obstacles, and 14 days for ChartView. Clean the anti-reflective lens with a lint-free cloth and never use ammonia-based cleaners. Polarized sunglasses can make the screen look dark. The unit has no user-serviceable parts.
