Dometic RM2451 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic RM2451 is a compact absorption refrigerator made for recreational vehicles and mobile homes. It has no compressor. Ammonia is liquefied in the finned condenser coil at the top rear and then flows into the evaporator inside the freezer section. There it evaporates into a circulating flow of hydrogen gas, and this produces the cold. Because the system has no moving parts, it runs silently. However, it depends on gravity, so the refrigerator must be fairly level whenever the vehicle is parked.
The vehicle only needs to be level enough to be comfortable to live in, with no noticeable slope in the floor or walls. If the vehicle sits off-level for several hours, liquid ammonia can collect in the evaporator tubing. This slows or blocks circulation, and cooling is lost. Leveling doesn't matter while the vehicle is moving, because rolling and pitching keep the ammonia flowing. The control panel is simple: a main power ON/OFF button, an AUTO/GAS mode selector, an AUTO indicator lamp and a CHECK lamp that only applies to gas operation.
In AUTO mode, the control always chooses 120 V AC over LP gas. If shore power is lost, it switches to gas automatically, and it returns to AC as soon as power comes back. If the burner fails to ignite, the CHECK lamp lights up. To reset it, turn the main power button off and then on again. After the LP tanks have been refilled or the unit has sat unused for a long time, you may need to reset three or four times to purge air from the gas lines.
A useful safety feature is the limp mode. If the control can't read the temperature sensor, it doesn't shut down. Instead, it runs the cooling unit continuously on whatever energy source is available. The refrigerator will keep working this way indefinitely, until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset. This protects your food until a repair can be made.
The fresh food compartment is fully sealed and unventilated. You should cover foods with strong smells, and foods that absorb smells easily. The coldest spots are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet. The upper door shelves are the warmest. The freezer is for storing food and making ice, not for deep freezing. Precooled meat or fish keeps about three times longer there than in the fresh food compartment. Ice forms faster when the trays sit directly on the bottom of the freezer.
To defrost, turn the unit off, empty it, and leave the drip tray in place with the doors open. Putting trays of hot water in the freezer speeds this up. Never use a hot air blower or sharp tools, because they can warp parts or puncture the ammonia system. Clean the interior with a weak, lukewarm soda solution, and use only warm water on the gaskets, shelves and evaporator. If the refrigerator will be stored for weeks, empty it, clean it and leave the doors ajar.
A qualified technician should do maintenance once or twice a year. This includes clearing the vents of nests and webs, brushing the coils, checking for gas leaks with a bubble solution, and checking the gas pressure at the test port. The flue should also be cleaned with a brush, not compressed air. A healthy flame burns clear blue over the burner slots. During installation, sealing the front frame and tightening the six screws in the specified order keeps the combustion system isolated from the living space.
