Dometic DM2682 Refrigerator Details
The Dometic DM2682 is designed to keep running even when a major component fails, thanks to its limp mode. If the display module stops working, the control system reverts to full automatic operation, keeps the temperature at the middle setting, and the power module keeps trying to restore the display. If the temperature sensor fails, the refrigerator runs on the energy source selected on the panel, with the cooling unit running continuously. It stays in this mode until a new sensor is installed and the system is reset.
Correct placement is important for absorption cooling. The refrigerator must be level whenever the RV is parked for several hours or more, because running noticeably out of level for long periods can cause a loss of cooling. Being level is not critical while you are driving. Cooling performance may also drop in sub-zero temperatures, which the manual describes as a normal, temporary condition for absorption refrigerators. When you first start the unit, set the thermostat to its coldest setting, because the cooling cycle can take a long time before you notice any cooling.
Storing food carefully improves both efficiency and freshness. The coldest areas are under the cooling fins and at the bottom of the cabinet, and the upper door shelves are the warmest. Let the unit cool before you load it, let hot food reach room temperature first, cover foods, and leave space for air to circulate. The frozen food compartment is not made for deep-freezing or quick-freezing. Precool meat and fish in the refrigerator first, and wipe moisture off items to limit frost buildup.
To make ice faster, set the thermostat to its highest setting. Once the ice has formed, set it back to normal so the cabinet does not get too cold. On units with an ice maker, the bale arm switches production on and off. Raise it about 1-1/2 hours before you travel so the water in the mold freezes and cannot splash out. You can change the cube size with the adjusting screw under the protective cover. Turn it no more than one revolution at a time, then let the ice maker cycle several times.
To defrost, switch the unit off, empty it, check that the drip tray is under the finned evaporator, and leave the doors open. Ice trays filled with hot water speed up the process. Never use a hot-air blower, because it can warp metal or plastic parts. Clean the interior liner with a lukewarm solution of baking soda and water. Use plain warm water for the evaporator, gasket and shelves. Check the vents for nests and gently brush dust off the rear coils.
When storing or winterizing the RV, defrost and clean the refrigerator, then use the door airing position card to keep the doors latched but slightly open. The control system draws a few milliamps even when switched off, so connect the batteries to a charger or turn off the main 12 VDC switch. If the burner does not light after the LP tanks are refilled or after a long period without use, turn the unit off and on up to four times to purge air from the gas lines.
The manual divides maintenance clearly between owner and technician. Owners can clean, defrost, winterize and change fuses. Gas connection checks, control system checks, burner cleaning and disposal must be done by a qualified technician. To keep the warranty valid, the owner must have annual preventive maintenance done at an authorized Dometic service center, starting on the first anniversary of the purchase, and keep the records.
