Garmin eTrex 30 GPS Receiver Details
The Garmin eTrex 30 is a rugged handheld navigator for hikers, geocachers, hunters and paddlers. It handles waypoints, routes and tracks. You can mark your current position, project a new waypoint by entering a bearing and distance, and use Waypoint Averaging to refine accuracy. For the best result, Garmin suggests collecting four to eight samples taken at least 90 minutes apart. Routes can be built point by point in the Route Planner, then reordered, edited, renamed or reversed. You can also navigate a saved track again later.
Track logging is flexible. You can record with or without a line on the map, and the recording interval can be set to fit your needs. The Most Often setting gives the most detail but fills memory faster. Auto Archive saves and clears old tracks automatically, and the track color can be changed. Two features are exclusive to the 30 and 30x models. Sight 'N Go lets you point the unit at a distant object, lock that direction and follow it with the compass. The elevation plot shows altitude over the distance you have traveled.
The map page offers Auto Zoom, adjustable zoom levels, text size, detail level, shaded relief and guidance text. A built-in tool measures the distance between two points. The included maps can create pedestrian and cycling routes on roads and trails, but not automobile routes. Optional City Navigator maps add address search. In compass mode, the Course (CDI) pointer shows how far you have drifted left or right of the course line. This helps on open water or when you need to avoid hazards near the course.
For geocaching, you can load GPX files directly or import large pocket queries from geocaching.com. You can log each attempt as Found, Did not Find, Needs Repair or Unattempted, add comments, and jump straight to the next closest cache. chirp searching can detect programmed Garmin beacons hidden in caches. Using ANT+, the device shares waypoints, routes, tracks and geocaches wirelessly with compatible units. It can also show data from heart rate, cadence and temperature sensors.
The main menu includes proximity alarms with a custom radius and an area calculator that works as you walk the perimeter. It also has an alarm clock, a calculator, a calendar and a stopwatch with lap timing. The Hunt and Fish tool predicts the best times for those activities, and Sun and Moon shows sunrise, sunset and the moon phase. Marine settings add Nautical and Fishing chart modes plus alarms for anchor drift, going off course and water depth. The trip computer supports big numbers, custom dashboards and many configurable data fields.
Users can create profiles that store settings for each activity. You can reorder the main menu, add or remove pages, change tones, set units and pick position formats. To save power, you can use the device with GPS turned off, dim the backlight, shorten the backlight timeout or disable GLONASS. For care, rinse the unit with fresh water after exposure to salt or chlorinated water. Clean it with a mild detergent and avoid solvents. Dry the USB port thoroughly before connecting it. Garmin Express handles software updates, map updates and product registration.
