Ideal MAX Logic Heat H30 Boiler Details

The Ideal MAX Logic Heat H30 is the most powerful model in the Logic Max Heat2 range. It is a heat only boiler, so it heats radiators and a separate hot water cylinder. It lights with a full sequence automatic spark, and a single electrode handles both spark ignition and flame detection. It works on fully pumped open vented or sealed systems, but it cannot be used on gravity circulation systems. It has no built-in pump, so an external system pump must be fitted on the flow side.

The boiler is controlled through a large colour display, four hot keys and a central heating temperature knob. Pressing Mode switches between Off, Ready and On. When an outside sensor is fitted, Summer and Winter modes are also available. The display shows up to three scrolling messages, and a leaf symbol marks the most economical knob setting, where the boiler condenses most efficiently. Ideal notes that turning the room thermostat down by 1ºC can cut gas use by up to 10%.

Intelligent Load Optimisation stops the boiler switching on and off too often. If the flow temperature goes 4ºC above the central heating target, the burner shuts off. When it relights, it drops to minimum rate over 60 seconds and stays there for 10 minutes. The 1:1 gas valve made by Honeywell lets the boiler reach full output at inlet pressures as low as 14 mbar.

The boiler works with OpenTherm controls, the Ideal weather compensation sensor (part 216119) and the Halo range. That includes Halo RF, Halo Wi-Fi, Halo Lite and a 2-Zone extension kit. The Halo wiring centre can reuse an existing switched live as a permanent live, so older installations don't need new cables. A 2x Switched Live menu option lets separate inputs control heating demand and hot water demand. The PRT3 RF thermostat (216131) is not compatible.

A siphonic condensate trap lowers the risk of freezing. If the condensate pipe does freeze, the boiler gurgles and then shows "Ignition Lockout". You can thaw the pipe with warm water, but never boiling water. Frost protection works in every mode as long as the boiler has a permanent live supply. For extra protection against overheating, Ideal recommends the pump overrun kit (221792), which keeps water circulating for 4 minutes after shutdown.

An Ideal System Filter comes in the box, and it must be installed correctly or the warranty is affected. Recommended inhibitors include Fernox, Sentinel X100, Adey MC1, Scalemaster SM-1 PRO and Calmag CM100. Do not fill the system with artificially softened water. Before plastic pipework is connected, at least 1 metre of copper pipe must run from both the flow and return connections.

The boiler is fully serviceable from the front. It has a ceramic burner, a front panel held by clips, and a menu with fault help, fault history and sensor readings. A "Service Due" reminder appears once the boiler has been installed for a year. Accessories include a rear flue outlet kit (55/80), a stand-off kit, balcony and soffit kits, and telescopic flues. The boiler contains no asbestos, mercury or CFCs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Ideal MAX Logic Heat H30 Boiler, and we answer them below.

Can the Ideal MAX Logic Heat H30 supply hot water directly like a combi boiler?
No. It is a heat only boiler. It supplies central heating, and it heats domestic hot water only when a separate hot water cylinder is installed.

What is the maximum central heating temperature?
You can set the flow temperature between 30ºC and 80ºC with the central heating temperature knob. To run most efficiently, turn the knob until the leaf symbol appears.

Can the H30 be converted to LPG?
Yes. The 30 kW model can run on propane with an LPG conversion kit. After a PCB replacement, you select the "Heat 30 kW, Propane" option during setup.

What does the Ignition Lockout message mean?
It means the boiler failed to light after five attempts. Check that your other gas appliances work, then press Restart. If the fault continues, check whether the condensate pipe is frozen or blocked, and contact a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

How do I thaw a frozen condensate pipe?
Follow the plastic pipe outside and find the frozen section. Warm it with a hot water bottle, a heat pack or a warm damp cloth, or pour warm water over it. Never use boiling water. Once the condensate flows freely, restart the boiler.

What system pressure should the boiler have?
With the system cold, the pressure should be 1.0 bar. When the system is hot, it should not go above 2.5 bar.

Does the boiler need a permanent live supply?
Yes. The boiler must be wired with a permanent live supply that is not switched by thermostats or programmers. If it isn't, frost protection will not work and the warranty becomes invalid.

Why might the boiler show Overheat Lockout?
Because the H30 has no built-in pump, leftover heat can trip the overheat thermostat, especially where the pipes run horizontally close to the top of the boiler. Check the system pressure and make sure the valves are open. Fitting the pump overrun kit (221792) helps prevent this.

Which thermostats are compatible?
Compatible controls include the Ideal Halo RF, Halo Wi-Fi, Halo Lite, the Halo 2-Zone kit, other OpenTherm controls and the weather compensation outdoor sensor. The PRT3 RF thermostat (216131) is not compatible.

How often should the boiler be serviced?
A Gas Safe Registered engineer should service it at least once a year. The boiler shows a "Service Due" message after one year, and servicing to the manufacturer's instructions is required to keep the warranty valid.

What warranty does the H30 come with?
It has a 10 year parts and labour warranty when registered within 30 days of installation. The Benchmark commissioning checklist must also be completed.

Can the boiler be installed in a cupboard or bathroom?
Yes. No cupboard ventilation is needed, and the minimum front clearance is 5 mm from the door, although 450 mm is still needed for servicing. In a bathroom it must be installed beyond Zone 2. The boiler is rated IP20 and should never be cleaned with water jets.
