Lowrance Hook-9 Fishfinder Details

The Lowrance HOOK-9 uses a simple keypad. Its keys are LIGHT/POWER, PAGES, MENU, ENTER and a pair of ZOOM keys. Hold LIGHT/POWER for three seconds to turn the unit on or off. Press both Zoom keys together to drop a Man Overboard waypoint, and the unit automatically builds an active route back to that spot. A Setup wizard starts on first power-up. You can relaunch it later by restoring the factory defaults.

From the Pages carousel you can open the Steer, Sonar, Downscan and Chart pages. There are also four preset combo pages: Chart/Sonar, Chart/Downscan, Sonar/Downscan and Chart/Sonar/Downscan. You can change the panel size and stack the panels side by side or one over the other. Press PAGES twice to switch the active panel, which is shown with an orange border. Overlay data lets you place custom readouts on top of the sonar, DownScan and chart screens.

Nine preset Fishing modes tune the conventional sonar for different conditions. They are General Use, Shallow Water, Fresh Water, Deep Water, Slow Trolling, Fast Trolling, Clear Water, Brackish Water and Ice. For example, Shallow Water is designed for depths of 60 ft or less, and Deep Water is for depths beyond 1000 ft. The manual recommends Fresh Water mode below 100 feet so the unit can track the bottom reliably. You can clear any changes by resetting the fishing mode.

Sonar tuning includes Sensitivity, Colorline and Auto Sensitivity. With Auto Sensitivity on, you can still adjust sensitivity by up to +/-40%. Custom range limits must be at least 6.5 ft (2 m) apart. Other tools include Noise Rejection, Surface Clarity, Split Zoom, Split Flasher, Amplitude Scope, Fish ID symbols and color palettes. Trackback lets you scroll back through recent sonar history. Stop sonar prevents interference with a second sonar unit on the boat.

In DownScan mode, a Contrast control makes suspended objects stand out. There are also palette options: a white background suits suspended targets, purple shows structure and bottom hardness, and sepia shows bottom detail. Sonar logs can be recorded to a microSD card at a quality level you choose. The Installation menu provides keel offset (entered as a negative value), water speed calibration, temperature calibration, a water distance reset and transducer type selection.

On the chart side, you can create, edit, sort and delete waypoints, routes and trails. Routes can be navigated forward or in reverse. To navigate a trail, first convert it into a route. You can set the map orientation to North Up or Course Over Ground. Chart settings include a COG extension line, grid lines, and a choice between Lowrance and Navionics chart data. The Steer page combines a compass with navigation data.

Advanced mode adds several settings. These include arrival radius, off-course distance, magnetic variation, bearings (True or Magnetic North) and WAAS/MSAS/EGNOS. The alarms are Arrival, Off Course, Anchor, Shallow and Fish. With the optional NMEA cable, the unit can display AIS targets and filter them by distance and speed. Other features are screenshots saved to microSD (Power, then Zoom +), a trip calculator, a GPS/sonar simulator, standby mode, and software updates available through lowrance.com.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Lowrance Hook-9 Fishfinder, and we answer them below.

How deep can the Lowrance HOOK-9 read?
The HOOK-9 reads down to 3000 ft (914 m) at 50/200 kHz, 1000 ft (305 m) at 83/200 kHz and 300 ft (91 m) at the 455/800 kHz DownScan frequencies.

How do I turn the HOOK-9 on and off?
Press and hold the LIGHT/POWER key for three seconds.

How do I set a Man Overboard waypoint?
Press the ZOOM IN and ZOOM OUT keys at the same time. The unit creates an active route back to the MOB waypoint. To end the function, you must cancel navigation.

Which CHIRP modes does the HOOK-9 support?
It supports Low, Medium and High CHIRP, depending on the transducer. A 50/200 kHz transducer gives Low/High CHIRP, and an 83/200 kHz transducer gives Medium/High CHIRP.

What power supply does the HOOK-9 need?
It needs a 12 V supply and accepts 10 to 17 V input. Typical current draw is 1.1 A, and it is protected by a 3-amp automotive fuse.

Is the HOOK-9 waterproof?
Yes, the unit is rated IPX7.

How do I save a screenshot?
Insert a microSD card, then press Power followed by Zoom (+). Screenshots cannot be saved to internal memory or to mapping cards.

Can I connect an AIS receiver or VHF radio?
Yes, through NMEA 0183. This needs the optional Power/NMEA cable 000-0127-49 and Advanced mode, and the unit's baud rate must match the connected device.

How many waypoints, routes and trails can I store?
You can store up to 3000 waypoints and 100 routes with up to 100 waypoints each. You can also keep 100 trails with up to 10,000 points per trail.

Which chart cards are compatible?
Compatible charts are Lake Insight and Nautic Insight PRO, Navionics+, C-MAP MAX-N, Fishing Hot Spots PRO and Insight Genesis. Cards go in the microSD/microSDHC slot.

Why is my depth reading missing or wrong?
Custom range and Manual mode can stop the digital depth reading or make it inaccurate. The unit also cannot lock onto the bottom if the selected range is too shallow.

Does Standby mode drain the battery?
Yes. Standby turns off the sonar and display, but the unit still draws power. Leaving it in Standby while the boat is not in use will run the battery down.
