Hunter Node-600 Details

The Hunter Node-600 has a threaded two-piece body with the battery compartment inside. To fit the batteries, unscrew the rear body, place one or two batteries in the tray, and attach them with the battery connector. Check that no water has entered the compartment, then screw the halves back together. The seal marker on the rear half must line up with the front half so the unit seals properly. A rubber cover keeps dirt off the face of the controller.

To wire the six stations, connect the black lead from each solenoid to the controller's single black common wire. Then connect one red wire from each solenoid to the matching red station lead. The station numbers are printed on the face of the controller. Seal every splice with a waterproof connector. To add a rain sensor, cut the yellow wire loop near its middle and strip about ½" (13 mm) of insulation from each end. Join each yellow wire to one sensor lead.

Standard Hunter controllers use a dial, but the Node-600 is programmed with buttons. One button steps through the programming functions. The up and down buttons change whichever value is flashing, and the left and right arrows move between items. A separate button selects program A, B or C. In idle mode, the screen shows the time, the day, the MV icon (when a master valve is set) and the battery level. The screen turns off after a period of inactivity to save power, and any button press wakes it.

In run mode, the screen shows the station number, the program letter, the remaining run time and a blinking Rotor icon. You set the clock in this order: year, month, day, time format, hour and minutes. After you enter the run time for the last station, press the advance button to open the Total Run Time Calculator. It shows the total watering time for the program. Seasonal adjustment affects every program and updates the displayed run times straight away. For example, a 20-minute run time set to 50% shows as 10 minutes.

Manual Watering lets you test one station or a whole program. To start it, press and hold the button from idle mode. This mode ignores the weather sensor. While a station runs, the up and down buttons change its run time. The arrow buttons stop the current station and move to the next or previous one. To end the cycle, lower the time to zero. When the rain sensor stops watering, the umbrella icon or the System Off icon with OFF appears on the screen.

To use Sensor Bypass, press and hold the button from idle mode until the umbrella icon flashes with ON. Press once to switch to OFF. A crossed umbrella then stays on the screen as a reminder. Easy Retrieve™ saves your preferred schedule to permanent memory when you hold two buttons for five seconds. Dashed lines move from left to right, and DONE flashes when saving is complete. To restore the schedule, use the same hold. This time the dashes move from right to left. Saving a new schedule overwrites the old one.

If you set up a master valve, Station 1 becomes the master valve and no longer waters. This leaves five watering stations on the Node-600. The MV icon stays on the screen and the setting applies to every program. The battery indicator has three levels: Full (100–60%), Med (60–25%) and Low (25–0%). At Low, replace the battery right away.

To reset the controller, press and hold the three reset keys from idle mode. After two seconds the screen goes blank. Keep holding until 12:00 flashes, then release the keys. The screen may count down from 10 to 1 before 12:00 am flashes. A reset erases the current program but keeps the schedule saved with Easy Retrieve. The troubleshooting guide covers four problems: a blank screen, the display showing watering with no water flowing, missed start times, and the controller watering more than once a day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Hunter Node-600 Irrigation Controller, and we answer them below.

What batteries does the Hunter Node-600 use?
It runs on one standard 9 V alkaline battery. You can fit a second battery to roughly double battery life, from about one year to about two years. Batteries are not included.

Can I use 24 VAC solenoids with the Node-600?
No. The controller works only with DC latching solenoids rated 9–11 VDC, such as the Hunter P/N 458200. 24 VAC solenoids will not work.

Does the Node-600 come with solenoids?
No. Only the NODE-100 includes a solenoid. The NODE-600 can run up to six solenoids, but you must buy them separately.

Will I lose my program if I remove the battery?
No. The controller has non-volatile memory, so your program is kept while you change the battery.

How far from the controller can I install solenoids and the rain sensor?
Up to 100 ft (30 m), using wire no thinner than 18 AWG (1 mm).

Which rain sensors are compatible?
Hunter Mini-Clik, Freeze-Clik and Wired Rain-Clik work with it, as do other interrupt-type sensors that don't need power. The Wireless Rain-Clik and any device that needs 24 VAC power are not compatible.

How do I use a master valve?
From idle mode, open the run-time function with Program A and Station 1 showing, then press the button once. The MV icon appears, and Station 1 becomes the master valve for all programs. This leaves five watering stations.

How can I pause watering for several days?
Use Programmable Off. This setting stops all scheduled watering for 1 to 99 days. When the period ends, the controller goes back to normal operation on its own.

Why does my controller water more than once a day?
The program probably has more than one start time. Each program can have up to four start times, so delete any you don't need.

Why is the display blank?
The screen turns itself off after a period of inactivity to save power. Press any button for one second to wake it. If it stays blank, replace the battery.

Does resetting the controller delete my saved Easy Retrieve program?
No. A reset clears the current program, but the schedule saved in Easy Retrieve memory stays. You can restore it afterward.
