Dyson DC14 Vacuum Cleaner Details

The Dyson DC14 is an upright bagless vacuum that is quick to assemble. You slide the hose into the guides at the back of the machine and click it into place. Then you slide the wand straight down into the hose until it clicks, keeping the hose straight so it does not bend. The wand handle clicks into the top of the machine, and the tools clip into their holders on the body. A carry handle lets you lift the machine safely. Before use, make sure the wand cap cover is closed.

To start vacuuming, plug in the machine, press the on/off switch, hold the cleaner head down with your foot, and pull the handle towards you. Always make sure the machine is upright before you change the brush control setting. Bare floors mode is meant for delicate floors, rugs, and carpets that can fuzz under a spinning brushbar. Dyson recommends that you check your flooring manufacturer's care instructions first. Fine dust such as plaster or flour should only be vacuumed in very small amounts.

The cleaning tools are versatile. To use the wand, push back the wand cap, press the release button, and pull the wand out of the handle until it clicks. Tools can go on the end of the wand, or straight onto the hose once the wand handle is removed. The manual warns that strong suction can make the hose pull back, so hold the hose firmly when it is fully extended, not the tool. On stairs, always keep the machine at the bottom of the staircase so it cannot fall.

To empty the Clear bin, press the cyclone release button to lift the cyclone pack off the machine. Then press the red emptying button to drop the dirt straight into the trash. For allergy sufferers, Dyson recommends holding the bin inside a bag while emptying it. Let the dust settle, then close the bin base before taking it out. To clean the shroud, press the catch to separate the bin and wipe off lint with a cloth or small brush. Never use detergents, polishes, or air fresheners, and never put the cyclone in water.

The manual gives clear steps for clearing blockages. First, check that the tools are clear. Then separate the wand and hose and check inside both. Tilt the machine forward and slide out the U-bend to look inside. To check the airway inspection valve, squeeze its release buttons. A loud ratcheting noise means the brushbar is blocked and the belt is being protected. The same noise can come from loose rugs or tassels, and it does not damage the machine. Clearing blockages is not covered by the limited warranty.

For brushbar maintenance, lay the vacuum on its front, take off the soleplate, and remove hair and lint. When you refit the soleplate, rest its three tabs inside the bumper strip and make sure it sits flush with the cleaner head. The troubleshooting section also explains how to fix a unit that will not stand upright. Hold the handle at 45 degrees, remove the airway inspection valve, and push the square plastic piece upward until it snaps into place. Optional accessories such as the turbine heads and flexi crevice tool extend cleaning to upholstery, stairs, and car interiors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dyson DC14 Vacuum Cleaner, and we answer them below.

How often should I wash the Dyson DC14 filter?
Check the washable lifetime filter regularly and wash it at least every 6 months. Depending on how you vacuum, it may need washing more often.

How do I wash the DC14 filter correctly?
Wash only the blue foam and the yellow case, in cold water only and without detergent, until the water runs clear. Let it air dry for at least 12 hours before refitting it. Never put it in a dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, or microwave.

Why is the brushbar not spinning?
Make sure the brush control is set to Carpets mode. The brushbar only spins when the handle is reclined.

What does the loud ratcheting noise from the cleaner head mean?
It means something is blocking the brushbar, and the clutch is protecting the belt. It can also happen with loose rugs or tassels. The noise does not damage the machine. Check the brushbar, or switch to bare floors mode.

My DC14 shut off during use. What should I do?
A blockage may have caused it to overheat. Unplug the machine, let it cool for at least 60 minutes, and then check the tools, wand, hose, U-bend, and airway inspection valve for blockages.

When should I empty the Clear bin?
Empty it as soon as the dirt reaches the MAX mark. Press the cyclone release button, then press the red bin emptying button over the trash or inside a bag.

Can I use the DC14 with an extension cord?
No. The manual says an extension cord is not recommended.

Can I vacuum my garage with the DC14?
Only with the Model 08909 Dyson Car Cleaning Kit accessories. Afterwards, wipe the soleplate and wheels with a dry cloth so grit does not scratch delicate floors.

How do I fix a DC14 that will not stand upright?
Hold the handle at a 45 degree angle and remove the airway inspection valve. Then push the square plastic molding up towards the ceiling until it snaps into place.

How long should Zorb powder stay on the carpet?
Sprinkle Zorb on the carpet with the machine switched off, work it into the pile, wait 30 minutes, and then vacuum.
