Dometic 3314851 Air Conditioner Details

The Dometic 3314851 is a ceiling-mounted air distribution box (ADB) with an integral mechanical control. It pairs with a range of Dometic rooftop air conditioners built for recreational vehicles. The system can go in when the RV is built or be added later, and one person can do the installation with brief help from an assistant. The manual says a qualified service technician must install and service the product. It also forbids any modification and any accessory that Dometic has not authorized in writing.

The rooftop unit normally sits over an existing roof vent opening. If there is no vent, a single unit goes slightly forward of the center of the RV and centered side to side. With two units, place one a third of the way back from the front and the other two thirds of the way back. When sizing the cooling, consider the RV's size, window area, insulation, the climate where it will be used, and the comfort level you want. Before installing, check the ceiling for obstructions such as doors, partitions, curtains and light fixtures.

Before cutting into the roof, turn off the gas supply and disconnect both the 120 VAC power and the positive 12 VDC battery terminal. Frame any new opening between rafters with wood at least 1.9 cm (3/4 in) thick. This framing supports the ceiling and stops the unit from pulling air out of the roof cavity. Never create a low spot in the roof, because standing water will cause leaks. Leave at least 38.1 cm (15 in) of supply cable showing at the front of the opening so it is easy to connect to the junction box.

Lift the unit onto the opening, using the roof gasket as a guide. Do not slide it, because sliding can damage the gasket. Inside the RV, you trim the duct divider to match the ceiling thickness by removing between zero and nine rows, as shown in a reference table. Install the ceiling template with four bolts, using the pattern for your model: positions A, D, E and H, or B, C, F and G. Overtightening can crack the base pan, and undertightening can leave a poor seal that leaks.

For the wiring, connect white to white and black to black, and fasten the bare copper ground under the ground clip. Wrap the connectors in electrical tape so vibration does not loosen them. Once the ADB is lined up with the template, put in the screws before fitting the loose front and rear vent doors. The filter goes into the return air grille, which slides into a slot on the ADB and swings up to lock in place.

In cooling mode, High Cool gives the most cooling and dehumidification, and Low Cool is best for holding the temperature or running overnight. The fan keeps running while the compressor cycles off, so the temperature stays even. After switching the compressor off by hand, wait at least two minutes before restarting it to avoid short cycling and overload. The optional heat strip is meant for chilly mornings and does not replace a furnace. The thermostat does not cycle it. A sliding lever opens and closes the central air outlet.

For upkeep, wash the filter in warm soapy water and never run the unit without it. Clean the cabinet with a soft cloth and mild detergent, and do not use polish or abrasive powders. The fan motor is lubricated at the factory and needs no maintenance. If ice forms on the coil, clean the filter, set the thermostat warmer, or run the fan only. To cut heat gain, park in the shade, cover the windows, and start cooling early. The model and serial number labels are behind the return grille.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Dometic 3314851 Air Conditioner, and we answer them below.

Which rooftop units work with the Dometic 3314851 air distribution box?
The 3314851.000 ADB works with rooftop models 457915, B57915, 459516, B59516, 540315, 540316, 640312 and 640315, including their .70X, .71X, .80X, .83X, .84X, C35X and C85X versions.

What size roof opening is required?
You need a square opening of 36.1 cm x 36.1 cm (14-1/4 in), ±3 mm, located between roof rafters and finished as NFPA 1192 requires. If an existing vent opening is larger than 36.5 cm, frame it down to the correct size.

What circuit protection and wire size are needed?
Use a dedicated 20 A time-delay fuse or circuit breaker and grounded No. 12 AWG copper wire for runs up to 7.3 m (24 ft). For longer runs, size the wire according to the National Electrical Code.

What generator size is recommended?
Dometic's general guideline is a 3.5 kW generator for one unit and 5.0 kW for two. Generators lose output at high altitude and when poorly maintained, and your sizing should account for the RV's total electrical load.

What is the maximum roof slope for installation?
Models 457915, B57915, 459516, B59516, 540315 and 540316 can be installed on a roof slope of up to 15°. Models 640312 and 640315 are limited to 8°.

What torque should be applied to the ceiling template bolts?
Tighten all four bolts evenly to 4.5 to 5.5 N·m (about 40 to 50 in-lb). Overtightening can damage the base pan or template, and undertightening can cause leaks.

What temperature range does the thermostat cover?
The mechanical thermostat turns the compressor on and off over a range of about 18.3°C to 32.2°C (65°F to 90°F), measured at the ADB air inlet.

Why should I wait before restarting the compressor?
After turning the compressor off by hand, wait at least two minutes before restarting it. Restarting sooner causes rapid cycling that can overload the compressor or the supply circuit.

Can the optional heat strip heat my RV in cold weather?
No. The optional electric heat strip does not replace a furnace. It is meant to take the chill off on cool days or mornings, and the thermostat does not cycle it.

How often should the air filter be cleaned?
Clean it at least every two weeks of operation. Remove it from behind the return air grille, wash it in warm soapy water, let it dry, and put it back. Never run the unit without the filter.

What should I do if ice forms on the cooling coil?
Check and clean the filter, make sure the air outlets are open, and turn the thermostat to a warmer setting. If ice keeps forming, run Fan Only until the coil is clear. If the problem continues, contact a service center.

Where can I find the model and serial numbers?
The rooftop unit's label is on the base pan, which you can see after removing the return air grille. The ADB's rating plate is on the ceiling template and is visible through the filter opening.

What should I check if the unit does not work?
Check that the generator is running and producing power, or that the shore power cord is the right size and plugged in. Then make sure the fuse is not blown and the circuit breaker is ON and not tripped. If it still does not work, contact qualified service personnel.
