Chicco Keyfit 35 Car Seat Details
The Chicco KeyFit 35 is an infant carrier that clicks into a base you install in the vehicle. The base includes a Recline Foot Adjuster, a Shoulder Belt Lock-Off, a LATCH Pull Strap with a storage slot, storage compartments for the LATCH connectors on both sides, and a built-in storage spot for the user guide. Because of this setup, you can move the carrier between the car and other places without reinstalling the base every time.
With the base, the LATCH installation goes like this. Pull up the LATCH Release Lever and let the straps out to full length. Attach both connectors to the vehicle anchor bars. Then pull the LATCH Pull Strap while pressing the base firmly into the seat, and roll the strap up into its slot. The manual says never to use LATCH and the seat belt together. If the vehicle has inflatable seat belts, leave the unused belt unbuckled behind the seat.
For a belt installation with the base, the Lock-Off holds the shoulder belt in place. That means you don't have to switch the vehicle's retractor into locked mode. Always use the Lock-Off on the side opposite the buckle. After the belt is seated in the Lock-Off, don't pull on it, because that could damage the Lock-Off or the vehicle belt. Some belt types must never be used: motorized belts, door-mounted belts, non-locking ELR lap belts, inflatable belts, and lap-shoulder belts with two retractors (unless the lap belt has a lock mode).
You can also install the carrier without the base. In that case, route the belt through the carrier's own seat belt guides and line up the Level Line on the seat label with the ground. A tightly rolled towel under the front edge can help correct the angle. On the back of the carrier there's an optional Shoulder Belt Guide. It wraps the shoulder belt around the carrier for extra stability, so check that your vehicle's belt is long enough to reach.
To secure your child, loosen the harness with the Adjuster Button, seat the child against the back and bottom of the carrier, and buckle both tongues until they click. Then pull the Harness Adjuster Strap to tighten. Use the pinch test to check the fit: if you can pinch a fold in the strap at the shoulders, it's too loose. Place the chest clip at armpit level, and never put the child in bulky clothing or wrap them in blankets before buckling.
A Head Rest Insert gives smaller infants extra support. You can use it with or without the Newborn Positioner, and its straps wrap around the edges of the head rest. To use the Newborn Positioner, pull the buckle through its bottom slot and run the harness straps over its side panels. The manual says not to use any other padding or pillows. The canopy rotates forward or backward, and you can take it off by undoing the toggle buttons and pressing the release button on each mount.
To change the handle position, press both Handle Release Buttons and rotate it. Before lifting the carrier by the handle, make sure the handle is locked in the carry position. For cleaning, you can spot-clean the fabrics, hand wash them, or machine wash them cold on a delicate cycle, then hang them to dry. Clean the harness, LATCH straps, and plastic parts with a sponge, warm water, and mild soap. Clean the buckle with warm water only. Never use bleach, solvents, or lubricants.
The manual also includes important safety warnings. Never put the carrier on soft or raised surfaces or on a shopping cart. Replace the seat after any crash. Don't use accessories that Chicco hasn't approved. Register the product so you can be contacted if there's a recall.
