Chicco Fit 2 Car Seat Details

The Chicco Fit 2 is an infant carrier with an extended-use base, built to keep a child rear-facing for longer than most infant seats. Its main feature is the Base Stage Lever, which switches the base between two installation angles. When you rotate the lever, the orange Base Stage Indicator shows the selected stage, marked "1" or "2". The goal is to let the seat change with the child: a deep recline protects young infants' breathing, and a more upright position later gives older babies more leg room.

Leveling is controlled by the Leveling Foot Adjuster at the center of the base. To set the recline, pull it up until the bubble sits between the arrows on the Bubble Level Indicator. Do this with the vehicle parked on level ground. When you use the carrier without the base, the level line on the seat label serves the same purpose. If the carrier needs a better angle, you can place a tightly rolled towel under its front edge.

For LATCH installs, the base uses a LATCH Release Lever and a single LATCH Pull Strap. Press the base firmly into the vehicle seat while you pull the strap to tighten both connectors. When you are not using LATCH, the connectors clip into storage compartments on each side of the base. The pull strap rolls up into its own compartment, which keeps loose webbing out of the way. A small compartment inside the base holds the user guide.

For seat belt installs, the base has a Shoulder Belt Lock-Off, so you don't need to switch the retractor into locked mode. The manual warns that locking the retractor anyway can make the seat tilt. Always use the lock-off on the side opposite the buckle. Without the base, the carrier has side Seat Belt Guides and an optional rear Shoulder Belt Guide that gives extra stability. With either option, the vehicle belt itself must lock.

To adjust the harness height, pull the Headrest Adjustment Strap and slide the head rest up or down until the harness slots are at or just below the child's shoulders. You don't have to rethread the harness. You tighten it with the Harness Adjuster Strap at the front of the seat. To loosen it, press the Adjuster Button. Shoulder pads, a chest clip and a Crotch Strap Retainer under the shell complete the system.

Two comfort accessories come with the seat. The Newborn Positioner sits under the harness and gives small infants a better fit. The Head Rest Insert attaches with elastic straps and a button hole, and you can use it with or without the positioner. A removable canopy rotates forward and backward. To remove it, press the button on each Canopy Mount. To reattach it, push both mounts into the slots on the carrier until they click.

The carry handle's Base Storage Position frees up space in front of the seat when the carrier is on its base in either stage. In Stage 2, the handle must be rotated behind the seat. To unlock the carrier from the base, squeeze the Base Release Handle on the back of the carrier. To clean the seat, hand wash or machine wash the fabrics on a cold, delicate cycle and hang them to dry. Sponge the harness, LATCH straps and plastics with mild soap. Never use bleach, solvents or lubricants.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Chicco Fit 2 Car Seat, and we answer them below.

What weight and height range does the Chicco Fit 2 support?
It is for children from 4 to 35 lbs (2 to 16 kg) who are 35 in (89 cm) tall or shorter. The top of the child's head must also be at least 1 inch below the top of the head rest.

When should I switch from Base Stage 1 to Base Stage 2?
Use Stage 2 only when your child can crawl or walk (usually around 9 months), weighs at least 15 lbs (7 kg), and is between 9 and 24 months old. Younger infants may have trouble breathing in the more upright position.

Can the Chicco Fit 2 be installed forward-facing?
No. This seat must always be installed rear-facing. If you install it forward-facing, your child could be seriously injured or killed.

Until what weight can I use the Newborn Positioner?
Use the Newborn Positioner only for infants who weigh 4 to 11 lbs (2 to 5 kg). Don't use any other positioner or pillow.

Can I use the Fit 2 carrier with a KeyFit or KeyFit 30 base?
No. Fit 2 infant carriers may be used only with Fit 2 bases.

Do I need to lock the vehicle shoulder belt when installing the base?
No, it's optional. The base's Shoulder Belt Lock-Off does the same job as locking the retractor, and locking it anyway can make the seat tilt.

Can I use LATCH and the seat belt at the same time?
No. Use LATCH instead of the vehicle belt, never together with it. The base works only with lower anchors at the standard 11-inch spacing.

How do I know the installation is tight enough?
Hold the base at the belt path and pull it side to side and forward. It should not move more than 1 in (25 mm). Check this before every use.

Can I take the Chicco Fit 2 on an airplane?
Yes. The carrier is certified for aircraft use on forward-facing aircraft seats. Install it without the base, using the lap belt, the same way you would in a vehicle. Check the airline's car seat policy before you travel.

How long can I use this car seat?
Don't use it once it is more than 6 years old. The "Do Not Use After" date is on the label under the seat. Replace the seat after any crash, even if you can't see any damage.

How should I clean the harness and buckle?
Sponge-clean the harness with warm water and mild soap and let it air dry. Do not machine wash it. If there is debris in the buckle, remove it and rinse it in a cup of warm water. Never use soaps or lubricants on the buckle or the LATCH hardware.
