Chicco Nextfit MAX Car Seat Details

The Chicco Nextfit MAX is a convertible car seat meant to stay with a child from the first ride home until the preschool years. The manual stresses that safety starts with registration: owners should mail the included card or register online so they can be contacted in case of a recall. The model and serial numbers are printed on a label underneath the seat, and they should be ready whenever you call customer service.

The seat ships with a Newborn Positioner for small infants. To install it, first remove the crotch strap pad, then pull the harness buckle through the slot at the bottom of the positioner. Next, route both harness straps over its side panels and press it firmly into the seat. Chicco warns against using any other infant insert, pillow or extra padding under or behind the child. Parents of premature babies should talk to the infant's doctor before using the seat.

The crotch strap can be moved if it ends up underneath the child. After unbuckling the harness, lifting the back pad and unsnapping the seat pad, you reach a compartment inside the seat. Slide the orange button on the crotch strap lock to free the strap, move it forward or backward, and then push the door down until it locks. Pulling up on the strap confirms it is secured.

Before LATCH installation, both straps must be fully loosened and moved to the correct colored opening while the storage compartments are open. Once the connectors click onto the vehicle anchor bars, you tighten the system with the two-stage pull sequence. When the LATCH system is not in use, the straps fold into storage compartments on each side of the base. The tether hooks onto a bar inside a rear compartment, and the user guide has its own storage slot at the back of the base.

Belt installations rely on built-in lock-offs, so you do not need to switch the vehicle's retractor into locking mode. Always use the lock-off on the side opposite the vehicle buckle. When rear-facing, the belt runs behind or in front of the crotch strap depending on where the strap sits. The manual lists belts that must never be used: motorized, door-mounted, non-locking lap belts, inflatable belts, and lap-shoulder belts with two retractors.

To secure the child, press the harness release button under the fabric and pull the straps forward. Squeezing the handle on top of the head rest raises or lowers the harness height together with the head rest. Buckle both tongues until you hear a click, then tighten by pulling the harness adjustment strap. Finally, slide the chest clip up to armpit level. If you can pinch a fold of strap at the shoulder, the harness is still too loose.

For care, you can machine wash the softgoods in cold water on a delicate cycle and hang them to dry. Shoulder pads should be hand washed. Wipe the harness, buckle and LATCH hardware with warm water only and do not use soaps or lubricants on them. The cup holder fits on either side and can go in the top rack of the dishwasher. Never use the seat without its pad or its crotch strap installed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Chicco Nextfit MAX Car Seat, and we answer them below.

What size child does the Chicco Nextfit MAX fit?
Children from birth to 6 years who weigh 4 to 65 lbs (1.8 to 29.5 kg) and are no taller than 49 in (125 cm).

Until what weight can my child ride rear-facing?
Up to 50 lbs (22.7 kg), as long as the child is no taller than 43 in (109 cm) and the harness straps sit at or below the shoulders.

When can I turn the seat forward-facing?
Only when the child is at least one year old and weighs at least 22 lbs (10 kg). Harness straps must be at or above the shoulders.

What are the LATCH weight limits?
Use the lower anchors only up to 35 lbs (15.9 kg) rear-facing and 40 lbs (18 kg) forward-facing. Above those weights, install the seat with the vehicle seat belt.

Can I use LATCH and the seat belt together?
No. Use either LATCH or the vehicle seat belt, never both at the same time.

Should I use the top tether when rear-facing?
No. The tether is only for forward-facing installation and must stay in its rear compartment when the seat is rear-facing.

How do I know the recline is correct?
On level ground, the bubble must sit between the lines for the direction you are using. On a slope, rear-facing uses the level line on the blue label. Forward-facing on a slope must use recline position 8 or 9 only.

How tight should the installation be?
Hold the seat at the belt path and pull it side to side and forward. It should not move more than 1 in (25 mm).

When should I use the Newborn Positioner?
Use it only rear-facing for infants weighing 4 to 11 lbs (1.8 to 5 kg).

Can I use this car seat on an airplane?
Yes. It is certified for aircraft use and installs the same way as a lap-belt-only vehicle installation. Contact the airline before you travel.

How long can I use this car seat?
Do not use it for more than 8 years. Check the "Do Not Use After" date on the label underneath the seat.

How do I clean the seat cover?
Machine wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle with mild detergent, or hand wash it, then hang to dry. Do not use bleach or solvents.

Do I need to replace the seat after a crash?
Yes. You must replace the seat after any crash, even if you cannot see any damage.
