Chicco Keyfit 30 Car Seat Details
The Chicco KeyFit 30 carrier has a harness with a buckle released by a red button. To fasten it, you insert each tongue until you hear a click, then tug it to confirm it's latched. A chest clip with a center release button keeps the shoulder straps in place. It must sit at the center of the child's chest, level with the armpits. You tighten the harness by slowly pulling the front adjuster strap. To loosen it, press the adjuster button and pull both shoulder straps forward. Chicco warns never to remove the adjuster cover or button.
You can rotate the canopy by grabbing the bow on both sides. Detach the fastener tabs when you rotate it toward the front of the carrier. A press button on the canopy mount lets you remove the bow, so you can take off the canopy fabric or use the carrier without a canopy. A pop-up visor pulls down from under the canopy to extend it and pushes back up to store it. Extend the canopy before you try to retract the visor.
For smaller babies, the Newborn Insert gives extra support and a snugger harness fit. To install it, pull the buckle through the insert's center slot and route both harness straps around its side panels. The top of the insert must always sit below the lower harness slots. A separate Head Support works with or without the insert. Its fastener tabs go through slots above the ones used for the harness and attach under the carrier. Never use the head support when the harness is in the upper slots.
The base includes a Recline Foot, Recline Buttons and a bubble indicator. The angle is correct when the whole bubble sits between the arrows, and the vehicle must be on level ground for the reading to be accurate. LATCH connectors pull out of storage pockets when you lift the LATCH Release Lever. You remove them from the anchors by pressing the red button on each connector. When you're not using LATCH, the connectors and pull strap must be stowed properly, or the carrier won't latch securely to the base.
Some vehicle belts are not safe for installing this seat. These include motorized (automatic) belts, door-mounted belts, and lap/shoulder belts with two retractors unless the lap belt has a lock mode. Non-locking ELR lap belts are also unsafe. Never place the seat in a position with a frontal airbag. Children 12 and under should ride in the back seat. Without the base, a tightly rolled towel under the front edge of the carrier can help get a stable installation.
For cleaning, the seat pad comes off after you unthread the harness straps, unhook the elastic band around the handle pivots and slide the pad out from under the adjuster cover. The adjuster cover must stay in place. Clean plastics, harness straps and LATCH straps with a sponge, warm water and mild soap. Do not use bleach, solvents or household cleaners. You can rinse the buckle and LATCH hardware in warm water, but never use soap or lubricant on them. Never use the carrier without its seat pad.
The manual also lists hazards to avoid when the carrier is out of the car. Never place it on beds or sofas, where it can tip over and suffocate the child. Never put it near the edge of a counter or table, or on top of a shopping cart. Never hang toys from the handle while driving. Check the buckle for hot surfaces, and replace the seat after any crash. Register the product with Chicco so they can reach you if it is recalled.
