Lowrance Hook-7 Fishfinder Details

The Lowrance Hook-7 uses a simple set of physical controls: a LIGHT/POWER key, a directional keypad, and the PAGES, MENU, ENTER and ZOOM keys. To turn the unit on or off, press and hold LIGHT/POWER for three seconds. Pressing both Zoom keys at once saves a Man Overboard waypoint and automatically creates an active route back to it. When the unit is first powered on, a Setup wizard runs, and you can launch it again later by restoring defaults.

The Fishing modes are preset packages of conventional sonar settings. The options are General Use (1000 ft or less), Shallow Water (60 ft or less), Fresh Water, Slow Trolling, Fast Trolling, Clear Water, Brackish Water and Ice (all 400 ft or less), plus Deep Water (1000 ft or more). Lowrance recommends Fresh Water mode in water under 100 feet deep so the unit tracks the bottom properly. Reset fishing mode clears any changes you have made and restores that mode's defaults.

The conventional sonar menu has adjustments for Sensitivity and Colorline. Auto Sensitivity is on by default and still lets you change sensitivity by about +/-40%. The Trackback feature lets you scroll back through recent sonar history by moving the cursor left. Other tools include Noise Rejection, Surface Clarity, Split Zoom, Split Flasher, an Amplitude Scope and Fish ID, which shows echoes as fish symbols. The manual warns that Fish ID can show debris or structure as fish.

The DownScan page adds a Contrast control and color palettes suited to different conditions. White works well for suspended targets, Purple shows structure detail and bottom hardness, and Sepia is best for bottom detail. You can also overlay DownScan on the conventional sonar page. Stop sonar stops the transducer from transmitting, which prevents interference when two sonar units run on the same boat. Sonar logs can be recorded to a microSD card at a quality level you choose.

The Installation menu includes keel offset, water speed calibration for paddlewheel sensors, temperature calibration, reset water distance and transducer type selection. Turning on Advanced mode unlocks navigation settings such as arrival radius, off-course distance, magnetic variation and bearings. It also enables arrival, off-course and anchor alarms. In basic mode, the unit offers Shallow and Fish alarms. Standby mode turns off the sonar and display to save power, but leaving the unit in standby will still drain the battery.

When an AIS device is connected through NMEA 0183, the unit shows AIS targets. You can filter targets by distance and speed and open vessel details such as the MMSI number. Chart orientation can be set to North Up or COG. You can save a screenshot to microSD by pressing Power and then Zoom (+). Other features include a Simulator, a trip calculator, customizable overlay data, and QWERTY or Alpha keyboards for entering text.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Lowrance Hook-7 Fishfinder, and we answer them below.

How deep can the Lowrance Hook-7 read?
Depth depends on the transducer frequency: up to 2500 ft (762 m) at 50/200 kHz, 1000 ft (305 m) at 83/200 kHz, and 300 ft (91 m) with DownScan at 455/800 kHz.

What screen does the Hook-7 have?
It has a 7-inch, 16-bit color Full VGA Solar MAX™ TFT display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and an 11-level LED backlight.

How do I turn the unit on and off?
Press and hold the LIGHT/POWER key for three seconds.

How do I create a Man Overboard waypoint?
Press the ZOOM IN and ZOOM OUT keys at the same time. The unit creates an active route back to the MOB waypoint, and you have to cancel navigation to end it.

What power supply does the Hook-7 need?
It runs on a 12 V system and accepts 10 to 17 V. Typical current drain is 1.1 A, and it's protected by a 3-amp automotive fuse.

Is the Hook-7 waterproof?
Yes. It's rated IPX7.

Which charts are compatible with the Hook-7?
Lake Insight® and Nautic Insight® PRO, Navionics® +, C-MAP MAX-N, Fishing Hot Spots® PRO and Insight Genesis, loaded on microSD or microSDHC cards.

How do I take a screenshot?
Insert a blank microSD card, then press Power followed by Zoom (+). Screenshots can't be saved to internal memory or to mapping cards.

What does Advanced mode enable?
It enables navigation settings (arrival radius, off-course distance and bearings), the arrival, off-course and anchor alarms, extra unit options, and NMEA 0183 output. NMEA 0183 output requires the optional cable 000-0127-49.

How do I connect an AIS device?
Turn on Advanced mode, connect the device with the optional Power/NMEA cable, and set the unit's NMEA 0183 Baud rate to match the AIS device.

Why is my unit not tracking the bottom properly?
Check that the depth range isn't set too shallow and that you're using the right fishing mode. Use Fresh Water mode in water under 100 feet deep. Custom range and Manual mode can also cause missing or incorrect depth readings.

How many waypoints, routes and trails can I store?
Up to 3000 waypoints, 100 routes with up to 100 waypoints each, and 100 trails with up to 10,000 points each.

How can I reduce interference from another sonar on my boat?
Use Stop sonar to pause transmission, change the ping speed, or pick a custom single CHIRP frequency.

How do I restore factory settings?
Open the System menu, select Restore defaults and confirm. This also brings back the Setup wizard.
