Lutron Diva DVCL-153P Dimmer Details
The Lutron Diva DVCL-153P belongs to the LED+ line, formerly sold as C•L. Its design uses advanced dimming technology so it handles LEDs and CFLs more smoothly than conventional incandescent dimmers. Every unit is 100% factory tested, and it includes power-failure memory, so the dimmer goes back to its previous state when power returns. It has also been electrostatic discharge tested for reliability.
Operation is simple. The paddle switch turns lights on to the level set on the slider, and it also turns them off. Moving the captive slider up raises the light level, and moving it down lowers it. A mechanical air-gap switch fully disconnects power to the load, which is useful when replacing bulbs or servicing fixtures. Precise color matching helps the dimmer blend in with coordinating Claro and Stainless Steel wallplates, which are sold separately.
A low-end adjustment lets the dimmer work with a wide range of bulbs. After installation, turn the lights on, move the slider to the bottom, and adjust the dial until dimming is stable. Then turn the lights off and on again to check operation. On the lever-type dial, moving it up (clockwise) increases brightness. On the wheel-type dial, moving it up decreases brightness. The dial's position varies between units.
When you install several dimmers side by side in a multigang wallbox, you may need to remove some side sections by bending them back and forth. This reduces the incandescent/halogen rating to 500 W with one side removed and 400 W with two sides removed. Never remove the outside sections. If you mix bulb types, the ratings also drop. For example, 30 W of LED load with one side removed allows up to 300 W of incandescent or halogen lighting.
Wiring works for single-pole and 3-way circuits. For 3-way and 4-way setups, pair the dimmer with Claro or other mechanical switches. Only one dimmer can be used in a 3-way circuit. In 4-way systems, the dimmer must go on the line side or the load side, never in the 4-way location. The black and solid red wires are interchangeable. The red/white wire connects to the common terminal, so mark that wire before removing the old switch.
Only bulbs marked DIMMABLE should be used. Some LEDs and CFLs need a minimum number of bulbs to work properly. Compatible products are listed at lutron.com/LEDfinder. The dimmer is meant for permanently installed fixtures only. Do not use it to control receptacles, motor-driven appliances, or transformer-supplied appliances, because it can overheat and damage equipment.
If there is no grounding means in the wallbox, the NEC allows installation when you use a plastic faceplate with plastic fasteners or a GFCI-protected circuit. Lutron wallplates meet this requirement. In that case, cap or remove the green wire. Always turn off power at the breaker before installing. The dimmer may feel warm during normal operation. Clean it only with a soft damp cloth, and protect it from dust when painting or spackling.
Gloss color chip keychains (DG-CK-1) are available for more precise color matching. You can register the product at lutron.com/CLregistration for an extended warranty, and how-to videos are at lutron.com/CLwiring.
