Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 Details

The Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 is a sonar and chartplotter combo that uses DualBeam PLUS technology. Its 20° center beam is surrounded by a wider 60° beam, so in 20 feet of water the coverage is about 20 feet wide. You can blend the two beams, view them separately, or compare them side by side in the Split Sonar View. With 2D CHIRP Mode on (the default), the unit sends continuous pulses across a range of frequencies, which gives more detailed returns and better target separation.

The sonar display can be tuned in detail. 2D SwitchFire has two modes. Clear Mode filters clutter to show fish size more accurately, and Max Mode shows raw returns for more arches and better jig tracking. Fish ID+ draws fish symbols: orange for targets in the 200 kHz beam and green for the 83 kHz beam. Its sensitivity runs from 1 to 10. Bottom View can be set to WhiteLine or Structure ID, and the RTS Window can show Real Time Sonar in Mono, Color Full, or A-Scope format.

Other adjustments include surface clutter filtering, a Noise Filter from Low to High 3, contrast (default 20), chart speed, and upper and lower ranges, which must be at least 10 feet apart. The Sonar Zoom View has Bottom Lock for spotting fish close to the bottom. The Circular Flasher View has an Ice Fishing Mode that adds a depth cursor, 2x zoom, a battery percentage readout, and the extra F1, F2, and F3 palettes.

The unit includes a built-in map and supports Humminbird LakeMaster, ChartSelect, and Navionics cards (Gold, HotMaps, Platinum+). Chart views include Chart, Chart Instrument, and a 3D Bird's Eye View. Chart orientation can be North-Up, Head-Up, or Course-Up. Auto Zoom, Auto Range, and Vessel Offset adjust the chart range and boat position based on speed. With a LakeMaster card, you can use depth highlight, shallow water highlight, and water level offset.

AutoChart Live builds custom depth maps from GPS and 2D sonar data. Humminbird recommends a steady speed between 0 and 8 mph in a zig-zag pattern. You can adjust transparency, contour intervals, and depth range, and delete bad data points. A ZeroLine Map Card removes the 8-hour storage limit and allows unlimited mapping.

Navigation features include waypoints with casting rings, targets, trolling grids, and proximity flags. You can navigate routes forward or in reverse, skip waypoints, and reset XTE. Continuous Navigation Mode keeps navigating around a waypoint even after you pass it. Pressing and holding the GOTO/MOB key starts Man Overboard navigation right away. Groups help organize data by trip or species, and you can import or export data by microSD card and manage it on a PC with HumminbirdPC.

Alarms cover depth, Fish ID, low battery, temperature, off course, arrival, and drift. With a microSD card, you can take screen snapshots by pressing and holding MARK, record sonar as .SON files, and play recordings back at adjustable speed. With NMEA 0183 Output turned on, the unit sends sentences such as GGA, RMC, DPT, and MTW to devices like autopilots.

For maintenance, clean the screen with mild soap and warm water only. Never use chemical glass cleaners, and keep the unit out of hot cars. Remove the unit cover before traveling faster than 20 mph.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 Fishfinder, and we answer them below.

What is the maximum depth capability of the Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2?
The included XNT 9 20 T DualBeam PLUS transducer can reach depths of up to 1500 ft (457 m). Humminbird verifies this in saltwater. Actual performance depends on transducer installation, water type, thermal layers, and bottom composition.

Does the Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 include Down Imaging or Side Imaging?
No. This model has 2D DualBeam PLUS CHIRP sonar and internal GPS. Down Imaging is on the CHIRP DI GPS G2 models, and Side Imaging is on the CHIRP SI GPS G2 models.

What CHIRP frequency ranges are available?
The included transducer supports Medium (75 kHz - 95 kHz), High (175 kHz - 225 kHz), and Medium/High, which combines both ranges. You can also set custom start and end frequencies in the 2D CHIRP Frequency Spectrum menu.

What power supply does the unit require?
Connect the unit to a 12 VDC supply protected by a 3 Amp fuse. The input range is 10 to 20 VDC and the current draw is 600 mA. Do not connect it directly to 24 V or 36 V systems.

How many waypoints, routes, and tracks can be stored?
The unit stores up to 2,750 waypoints, 47 routes with 50 waypoints each, and 50 tracks with 20,000 track points each.

Is the unit waterproof?
Yes. It is rated IPX7, which means it is waterproof and submersible at 1 m for 30 minutes. Always keep the microSD card slot cover closed.

Can I create my own lake maps?
Yes. AutoChart Live records up to 8 hours of mapping data on the unit. It needs a LakeMaster or Navionics map source. For unlimited mapping, add a ZeroLine Map Card.

How do I check the GPS reception?
Press and hold VIEW and select System > GPS Diagnostic View. Check that the Fix Type shows Enhanced or 3D and that a latitude/longitude position appears.

How do I update the software?
Register the unit at humminbird.com and download the update to a formatted microSD card. Insert the card in the control head and power it on, then follow the prompts. Export your navigation data before updating.

Why does the control head lose power at high speed?
The engine may be delivering unregulated power, which triggers the unit's over-voltage protection. Make sure the input voltage does not exceed 20 V.

What cable gauge should I use to extend the power cable?
Use 18 AWG for 1 to 6 ft, 14 AWG for 6 to 12 ft, and 12 AWG for 12 to 24 ft. Use multi-stranded copper wire.

Can the unit be used for ice fishing?
Yes. Turn on Ice Fishing Mode to use the Circular Flasher View with a depth cursor, 2x zoom, a battery percentage readout, and the F1, F2, and F3 palettes.
