Chicco Nextfit Car Seat Details

The Chicco NextFit has an integrated harness, and you change its height from the top of the seat. Squeezing the Adjustment Handle on the Head Rest moves the Head Rest and the harness together, so you never need to rethread the straps by hand. The manual says to make sure the Head Rest locks into position before you tighten anything. If you use the lowest Head Rest position, fold the seat back padding panel under so the straps sit correctly.

To secure a child, press the Harness Release Button on the front of the shell and pull both straps forward to loosen them. Press the buckle button to free both tongues. The chest clip opens with a center button. After you seat the child, insert each tongue until it clicks, then pull up firmly to check it is latched. Pull the slack up from below, then tighten with the Harness Adjustment Strap until you can no longer pinch a fold of webbing at the shoulders.

Place the Chest Clip at the center of the chest, level with the armpits. It can be used in either of two orientations, one for a smaller child and one for a larger child. Hook-and-loop fasteners hold the shoulder pads on the straps. You can move the pads down toward the buckle while tightening, then slide them back up to the shoulders. The manual adds a caution about winter clothing: the harness must compress any bulky garment so the child cannot lean forward.

The Crotch Strap can sit in a forward or rearward position. You reach it by lifting the back padding, unsnapping the seat padding and opening a locking compartment with a slide button. After you move it, push the door down until it locks, then pull up on the strap to confirm. To remove the strap completely, fully recline the seat, then turn the metal anchor bar underneath so it passes through its slot. Never use the seat without the crotch strap installed.

The seat has several built-in storage areas. Each LATCH strap stows in a closable compartment on either side of the base, and the SuperCinch strap folds into place. The top tether stores in a rear compartment: hook it onto the bar and pull the strap tight before closing the door. A separate compartment at the rear of the base holds the user guide. Keep the LATCH compartments closed except when you are moving the straps between belt paths.

The manual lists vehicle belts that must never be used with this seat: motorized automatic belts, door-mounted belts, lap-shoulder belts with two retractors (unless the lap belt has a lock mode), non-locking ELR lap belts and inflatable belts. Because the integrated lock-off holds the belt, locking a switchable retractor is optional. Rear-facing, locking it may even tilt the seat. Never use LATCH and the seat belt together. When installing with LATCH, do not buckle the unused belt behind the seat.

Fabrics can be hand washed, or machine washed in cold water on a delicate cycle with mild detergent, then hung to dry. Shoulder pads are hand wash only. The harness and LATCH straps are sponge-clean only and must never go in a machine. The LATCH straps cannot be replaced. If debris gets into the buckle, rinse it in a cup of warm water. Never use bleach, solvents or household cleaners. Keep soap and lubricants away from the buckle and LATCH hardware.

You must replace the seat after any crash, even if you cannot see damage. Only use pads or accessories that Chicco USA has approved, because anything else voids the warranty. In sunlight, cover the seat and check plastic and metal parts for heat before seating the child. To keep the child warm, put a blanket over them only after the harness is tightened.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Chicco Nextfit Car Seat, and we answer them below.

What are the weight and height limits of the Chicco NextFit?
The seat is for children weighing 5 to 65 lbs (2.2 to 29.4 kg) who are 49 inches (1245 mm) tall or less. Rear-facing covers 5 to 40 lbs, and forward-facing covers 22 to 65 lbs.

When can I turn the seat forward-facing?
Only when the child is at least one year old and weighs at least 22 lbs (10 kg). Chicco and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend staying rear-facing until at least age 2, or until the child reaches the rear-facing limits.

When should I stop using LATCH?
Switch to a vehicle seat belt installation once the child weighs more than 35 lbs (16 kg) rear-facing or more than 40 lbs (18 kg) forward-facing.

Can I use LATCH and the seat belt at the same time?
No. The manual says to use LATCH in place of the vehicle belt, never both together.

How do I know the recline is correct?
On a level surface, adjust the recline until the bubble sits between the lines for your installation direction. On a slope, rear-facing installs use the level line on the blue label. Forward-facing installs on a slope must use recline position 8 or 9 only.

Is the top tether used rear-facing?
No. Rear-facing, the tether must stay in its rear compartment. Forward-facing, always attach it if your vehicle has a tether anchor.

When is the Newborn Insert used?
Only rear-facing, and only for infants who weigh 5 to 11 lbs (2.2 to 5 kg). Do not use any other insert or pillow.

Can I take the NextFit on an airplane?
Yes. It is certified for aircraft use on forward-facing aircraft seats. Install it the same way as a vehicle lap belt installation, and check the airline's policy first.

How long can I use this car seat?
Do not use it if it is more than 8 years old. The "Do Not Use After" date is on the label under the seat.

Can the harness be machine washed?
No. Sponge clean the harness with warm water and mild soap, then air dry. Seat fabrics can be machine washed in cold water on a delicate cycle.
