Pioneer DMH-160BT Receiver Details

The Pioneer DMH-160BT is a single-chassis digital media receiver with no disc drive. Everything happens on its touchscreen. The top menu shows source icons, and you swipe left to reach hidden ones such as Mirroring, AUX and Camera. A short touch on the power key turns the display information off, and touching and holding it powers the unit down. Even when powered off, the unit wakes up for an incoming hands-free call, when a reverse camera signal arrives, or when the ignition cycles from ACC OFF to ACC ON.

Smartphone integration is the main attraction. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto run over USB, and the voice key starts Siri or Google voice recognition. The Priority of Connectivity setting picks whether an Android phone opens in Android Auto or USB Mirroring. Mirroring needs a compatible app on the phone and lets you control it with taps, drags and flicks. While CarPlay is active, hands-free calling over Bluetooth is not available. An Android Auto phone pairs over Bluetooth automatically when you connect it.

For Bluetooth calls, the receiver transfers your phonebook automatically, and you can also sync it manually. It may not download every contact if the phone holds more than 1 000 entries. You can dial from the phonebook, from received, dialed and missed call lists, or from a keypad. Auto Answer picks up incoming calls, and the other party's listening volume has three levels. With SSP pairing, you confirm a six-digit code on screen. Audio streaming works with A2DP, and AVRCP adds track control, repeat and shuffle.

The radio uses BSM (best stations memory) to store the six strongest stations automatically. It also has a Local seek mode for strong signals only, and a PS scan that plays each preset for 10 seconds before moving to the next. With a SiriusXM Connect Vehicle Tuner and a subscription, you get satellite radio. The Radio ID is on Channel 0, channel lists can be sorted by category, and a passcode-based Parental Control locks mature channels. The default passcode is 0000.

USB playback covers audio, video and still images, and you can switch between file types from the list screen. Folders play in numerical order, and folders with no playable files are skipped. For videos, you can adjust Brightness, Contrast and Color. Photos can be rotated 90° clockwise and shown as a slideshow. On an iPhone, the music library is limited to 2000 songs. If English is the system language, an alphabet search bar helps you scroll quickly through long song lists.

Sound tuning goes beyond the numbers. The equalizer has five presets, Super Bass, Powerful, Natural, Vocal and Flat, plus one Custom curve shared by all sources. You can drag a finger across the bands to draw the curve. Fader and balance can be set by dragging a point on a graph. Volume is adjusted separately for main, ring, talking, navigation, voice and TA audio. Loudness has Low, Mid and High settings, and the subwoofer output can be switched on or off.

The rear camera input switches to a full-screen image automatically when you shift into reverse. Camera View mode can show the camera at any time. You can turn parking assist guidelines on, adjust them against tape markings at measured distances, and fine-tune camera brightness, contrast and color from -10 to +10. Display options include automatic dimming when the headlights come on, separate day and night brightness, preset illumination colors, and custom wallpapers loaded from USB. Firmware updates are installed from a USB drive.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Pioneer DMH-160BT Multimedia Receiver, and we answer them below.

Does the Pioneer DMH-160BT support wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?
No. The manual says both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have to be connected through the USB port. For an iPhone, use a Lightning USB interface cable. For Android, use a USB-C or micro USB cable.

How many Bluetooth devices can be paired?
Up to five devices. When you pair a sixth, the unit deletes the first paired device and registers the new one.

Why can't I watch videos while driving?
A parking brake interlock blocks video until the vehicle is stopped and the parking brake is applied. The light green lead has to be connected to the power supply side of the parking brake switch. If the interlock is active, apply the parking brake, release it, and apply it again while keeping the brake pedal pressed.

Which Android versions work with USB Mirroring?
USB Mirroring needs Android 5.0 or higher, up to Android 10. You also have to install a compatible mirroring app on the phone and set Priority of Connectivity to Mirroring.

Can I play FLAC files from a USB drive?
Yes. The unit decodes FLAC up to 192 kHz / 24 bit. The drive has to use FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS. Partitioned drives and USB hubs are not supported.

What do I need to listen to SiriusXM?
You need a SiriusXM Connect Vehicle Tuner (sold separately) and an active subscription. Tune to Channel 0 to find your Radio ID, then activate online at siriusxm.com/activatenow or by calling 1-866-635-2349 in the USA.

What is the default SiriusXM Parental Control passcode?
The default passcode is 0000. You can change it with Change Passcode in the SiriusXM settings.

Why is the screen black when I shift into reverse without a camera?
The Back-up Camera Input setting is turned on. Turn it off in the camera settings if you don't have a rear view camera installed.

How do I update the firmware?
Copy only the correct update file onto a blank, formatted USB drive and connect it to the unit. With the vehicle stopped and the parking brake on, go to System Settings, open System Information, and touch Update. Don't switch the unit off during the update. It restarts automatically when the update succeeds.

Can I connect an external amplifier and subwoofer?
Yes. The unit has front, rear and subwoofer RCA preouts rated up to 2.0 V. Connect the blue/white lead to the amplifier's remote terminal (max. 300 mA, 12 V DC).

What does the message Caution! AMP Overload mean?
It means the unit has detected an amplifier overload. Check the amplifier connections. Then turn the ignition off, wait at least 9 seconds, and turn it back on. You can also disconnect the battery's positive (+) cable and reconnect it.

Which iPhone models are compatible?
The manual lists models from the iPhone 5s through the iPhone 11 Pro Max, including the first- and second-generation iPhone SE. The unit shows the iPhone source as iPod.

Can I install the DMH-160BT in a car without an ACC ignition position?
No. The unit requires an ignition switch with an ACC (accessory) position and must not be installed in a vehicle without ACC wiring.
