Duromax XP4400EH Generator Details

The Duromax XP4400EH is a dual fuel portable generator. It runs on gasoline or propane, and a front-panel inlet takes the included propane regulator and hose with its ACME connection. Only one fuel can run at a time. When you use propane, the gasoline valve must be closed, and when you use gasoline, the LPG supply must be shut off. Leftover gasoline in the carburetor can make the engine run unevenly for a few minutes after switching, so connect loads only once it runs smoothly.

A key feature is DuroMax's Power Boost Technology. A voltage selector switches the dual 120 V windings between "120/240V" and "120V ONLY". The "120V ONLY" setting doubles the available 120 V amperage and balances the load automatically, which helps with heavy loads like RV air conditioners. Change the selector only with the main AC breaker off. Changing it with the breaker on can seriously damage the generator.

The power panel has a voltmeter, a low oil alert light, a three-position Start/Run/Off engine switch and DC charging posts for 12 V automotive batteries. An automatic shutoff stops the engine when the oil is low. You should still check the dipstick before every use. Keep each starter attempt under 5 seconds, and wait 10 seconds before trying again. The recoil start works as a backup if the battery is weak.

Setup starts with removing the brightly colored shipping braces and a wooden brace from under the unit. Do this before adding any fuel or oil. The optional wheel kit includes support legs, an axle, washers, cotter pins and handles. The battery ships disconnected, so you need to attach the negative cable. Ground the generator with No. 12 AWG stranded copper wire run to a copper or brass rod driven into the earth.

If you always run the generator above 3,000 feet (900 m), have a dealer modify the carburetor. Even with the modification, engine power drops by about 3.5% for each 1,000 feet. A modified carburetor used below 3,000 feet can overheat the engine. Fill the gas tank no higher than 1.5 inches from the top. The fuel gauge may not register when the tank is less than one-third full.

The package includes a double-sided screwdriver, 10/12 mm and 13/15 mm spanners, a spark plug wrench, an oil funnel, the propane regulator hose, DC charging cables and plug ends for making your own cords. A wattage chart, cord gauge table and wiring diagram help with sizing loads and troubleshooting. Note that the manual's AC usage chart lists 4500/5500 W for gasoline and 4275/5225 W for propane. These figures differ from the spec sheet values shown above.

The maintenance schedule covers oil, the air cleaner, the sediment cup, the spark plug, the spark arrestor, valve clearance and the fuel tank. Clean the combustion chamber every 500 hours, check the fuel tube every 24 months and inspect the carbon brushes every 250 running hours. The foam air filter is washed in dish detergent and lightly re-oiled. The oil drain plug takes a 12 mm wrench. The manual also explains how to replace the AVR if overheating or overloading damages it.

Storage steps depend on how long the generator will sit. For storage longer than 30 days, drain the fuel tank and carburetor, put 2 tablespoons of 10W-30 oil into the cylinder and keep the battery on a tender indoors. Gasoline older than 30 days can damage the fuel system. The emissions control system has a separate two-year warranty, and DuroMax customer service is available at 844-DUROMAX.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can't find the answer you need? Here are some frequently asked questions about the Duromax XP4400EH Generator, and we answer them below.

How much oil does the Duromax XP4400EH need?
The crankcase holds 20 fl oz (0.6 L). The recommended oil is SAE 10W-30. The generator ships without oil, so you must fill it before the first start.

What type of gasoline should I use?
Use fresh unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Never use an oil and gasoline mix or gasoline older than 30 days.

How long will it run on a tank of fuel?
At 50% load, it runs about 10 hours on a full 4-gallon gasoline tank and about 12 hours on a 30 lb propane tank.

What is Power Boost?
Power Boost uses the voltage selector set to "120V ONLY" to double the available 120 V amperage. It is useful for heavy loads like RV air conditioners. Only change the selector with the main breaker off.

Which outlets does the generator have?
It has a 120/240 V 4-prong twist lock outlet (NEMA L14-30), a 120 V GFCI outlet (NEMA 5-20) and 12 V DC posts for charging batteries.

Can I use the DC output to jump start a car?
No. The DC posts are only for recharging 12 V automotive-type batteries. The manual says never to jump start a car with the generator.

What spark plug does it use?
Use an F6RTC-type plug, such as the NGK BPR6ES, gapped to 0.7–0.8 mm (0.028–0.031 in).

How often should the carbon brushes be inspected?
Inspect the carbon brushes every 250 running hours. They are wear parts that work with the AVR to regulate output.

Do I need to adjust the generator for high altitude?
If you always run it above 3,000 feet (900 m), have a dealer modify the carburetor. Power still drops by about 3.5% for each 1,000 feet of altitude.

What should I do if the electric start fails?
Release the switch after no more than 5 seconds and wait 10 seconds before trying again. You can also start the generator with the recoil start, with the engine switch set to RUN.

How should I ground the generator?
Connect a No. 12 AWG stranded copper wire from the grounding nut to a copper or brass rod driven into the earth. Check your local grounding codes with an electrician.

What warranty does the XP4400EH have?
It has a 3-year parts warranty for residential use and 1 year for commercial or heavy use. The emissions control system has a separate two-year warranty.
